me and my poly vampire lovers killing our abuser :)

this book is what a car seat headrest album would be if it were a book. and i like car seat headrest.
  • we are bulletpointing this shit cause oh my god
  • i refuse to read a book ever again that phrases cumming as “part of his spirit had been blasted around the room” cause jesus christ
  • i also refuse to read another book that mentions a minors dick and ass and his masturbation so much. felt so insanely uncomfortable to read
  • also had a graphic sex scene between two teens. hhhhhhhh i hate how much this book sexualised its protagonist
  • i think this book wanted the aesthetics of the coming-of-age genre, but it just did not put in the work Oh My God. character relationships felt horrifically flimsy, conflicts were solved ridiculously fast in the end, and i still just hate how much this book aimed at adults sexualized a literal minor.

really really wasn’t what i expected :/ don’t trust the title, this does not read like a memoir

ngl i can already tell that i’m not going to like this. checked reviews and i agree with the statement that Fathomfolk needs more editing. very disappointed that this of all things was the rare book i bought instead of borrowing it from the library :/

didn’t review this when i finished it last night. simply too eepy. still eepy this morning but just so you know i loved this it was awesome

I WANT MORE OF THIS WORLD AND THESE CHARACTERS HOLY SHIT THIS WAS SO GOOD I WOULD READ 500+ PAGES OF THIS

it feels odd to say that a book has “noticeably aged” when it was only released in 2017, but honestly that’s the case with this book.
i completely see how 7 years ago, a ya book about a trans girl (where the plot isn’t entirely about her being trans) would’ve been practically unheard of, and in that respect i love this book. every piece of literature exists in the context of the time period and the place it was written in, and that truly goes for this book.
in terms of the book’s content itself, i did find the superhero aspect of the book to be pretty lacking. the worldbuilding feels very basic, and none of the superhuman characters feel unique.
i love how, even though when danny transforms she’s extremely pretty, that being pretty doesn’t solve all her problems (although the idea of her transforming into essentially model levels of beauty standards seems a tad dated).
over-all, if i were recommending trans ya books for people today this may not be on the list, but i have massive respect for what it did and tried to achieve

i think either this needed to be aged down to middle grade, or marketed as younger ya and have the characters aged down (they did not act like 17 and 18 year olds). so many mentions of farts
also marketing this as horror is honestly pretty misleading, as even though Cade does have a love of horror movies, the actual horror-esque plotline is explained very quickly by a series of large misunderstandings
HOWEVER i am happy that this books exists, imo more books talking about queer rural life are always a good thing
