this was such a banger !!!!!! the ending was super cheesy but in a really great way
i liked Niya more in this book than in Sunbearer Trials, she reminds me in vibe of Mabel from Gravity Falls and i love Mabel so that really works out
nonbinary Xio yay !!!!!
the ending did make me cry a little bit :)))
also this was the first book i finished while using the app Bookly and that was such a good choice, probably the only reason i didnt keep struggling to get around to finishing this :D
good book good duology chefs kiss mwah

lots and lots of mixed feelings.
on the one hand i love that a book about this exists. but i dont like how down karla is on people not wanting to attend college and how weird she is about sitting in on a church service

i have lots and lots of thoughts on this book.
firstly, while it isn’t a favorite of my year, i definitely liked it. cannot speak to how accurate the bipolar rep is though
what this book reminded me a lot of is what ive mentally nicknamed “the kurt cobain problem”: when an artist dies and people just,, sort of forget that they were a real person with likes and dislikes and good and bad qualities and an entire life. and when people then attribute meaning and symbolism to their art that may or may not have been there in the first place (and admittedly, ive done this! would like to think im a lot better now but man you would not have wanted to meet 14-year-old me and my manic street preachers tumblr fan account back in 2020. it was Bad).
the plot definitely slowed down in this between the first 20% and last 20%, it felt like we were just reiterating the same points over and over. but the writing style was very to-the-point and i like that so that kept me pretty interested

the hype was so right for this one <33333

after despising Mooncakes so much (which was co-created by this author) im super pleasantly surprised to have loved this so much
the art style is so nice, and the blues are lovely
it helps that i always connect really intensely with robot characters honestly (also i kept reading Kye as Kyle over and over again lmao)

cute book, reminds me in ways of Our Flag Means Death

extremely, undeniably, meh.
this has so many things i normally like — gothic, fantasy, academic rivals, gay people, fairytales — but it just wasn’t tied together in a way that i liked much at all or that kept me interested.
