This Is Our Rainbow: 16 Stories of Her, Him, Them, and Us
Mark Oshiro, Katherine Locke, Claribel A. Ortega, Ashley Herring Blake, Nicole Melleby, Alex Gino, Aisa Salazar, Mariama J. Lockington, Shing Yin Khor, AJ Sass, Lisa Bunker, Lisa Jenn Bigelow, Marieke Nijkamp, Justina Ireland, Eric Bell, Molly Knox Ostertag
These stories were pretty diverse (it's not really "stories for every letter of the acronym" like the blurb says but still) and I think it would be a good book to introduce certain things to kids. "Guess What's Coming to Dinner" by Mark Oshiro had an interesting and unexpected twist. "Golem and the Mapmaker" by Molly Knox Ostertag was too short, they need their own book lol. "Paper Planes" by Claribel A. Ortega had an interesting concept with the letters. Some of my favorite stories were: "The Makeover" by Shing Yin Khor, "Devoyn's Pod" by Mariama J. Lockington, "The Wish and the Wind Dragon" by Katherine Locke, "Splinter & Ash" by Marieke Nijkamp, and "Sylvie & Jenna" by Ashley Herring Blake. Also I liked the variety of formats (most stories are like a regular novel but also two graphic novel like stories and one in verse)
This book was very fast and easy to get through. I liked some of the messaging and the sci-fi dystopian world was pretty interesting. I did not like Titus the main character. That might have been on purpose but I hated him.
2. The danger doesn't feel dangerous. It seems Ms.Winters is this big danger and Robby needs to help Abby asap but this book spans like two months. I understand Robby had a lot to figure out but when he learns Mrs.Winters had six of her students disappear before he doesn't immediately go tell his best friend the danger she could be in?
3. Kinda similar Robby's stepmom disappears and we don't really see him talking about it? She's been gone for months and he doesn't seem worried?
4. This isn't that big of an issue but I just don't like them being referred to as "teenage witches" in middle school
5. the ending was okay not what I expected
6. Probably a personal thing but this book was hard to get through at points. I had to take breaks.
There were still some funny moments and some things I kinda liked. I struggle where to rate it 2.75 feels too low and 3 feels too much.
