I was definitely not prepared for this book. First of all, I assumed it was going to be a fantasy novel based on the title. Second of all, I have never cried from reading a book but I came so very close to it while reading this one. Had I not been reading on my lunch break at work, there is an excellent chance I would have shed at least a tear or two.

What I liked most about this book was how much I saw of my life in high school in it. I grew up in East TN, not very far from where the setting of this book is supposed to be. The town I grew up in is very small, upsettingly so, and full of people I always felt never understood me. All my feelings of desperation to escape were in this book and it made it all the more real to me.

This was such a great read! I loved that the story didn't start with Chris's coming out but rather the aftermath of it. I definitely liked Chris's character more than Maia's and often found myself wondering what in the world she was doing. I hoped to see more of the development and change in Chris's mom as well. I also liked the end wasn't wrapped up in a neat little bow.

I received a digital ARC of Kingdom Cold from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

The language seemed far more appropriate for a stereotypical high schooler in present day than a YA fantasy book and seemed juvenile at times. The character development left a lot to be desired and the POVs for side characters seemed unnecessary most of the time.

A lot of parts seemed rushed or barely fleshed out, leaving me to feel lost or like I missed something.
