If I had to sum it up in a few words, I'd say it's the Roman Empire meets Star Wars. There's a ruling empire and a resistance/rebellion that needs some work. It switches off every other chapter between the two main characters and I highly recommend it as an audiobook. It's one of the few books I've come across that has a man and a woman reading the respective parts and I think it made more enjoyable for the writing style.
Jenny Lawson rambles semi-often and sometimes it's funny, but sometimes it's not. By the last half of the book, I was having to stifle my laughter every few minutes to avoid appearing to be a crazy person at work.
This sort of reminded me of Juliet Marillier's Sevenwaters books. It wasn't at all what I was expecting and I wasn't even sure if I liked it until about halfway through but then I couldn't put it down. It has everything you could want: pirates, magic, ghosts, mythology, betrayal, and a satisfying ending.
