why do I continue with let authors hurt me?
First of all! i can't believe I have to say this but I saw a review somewhere that said something along the lines of "DNF @30% there's so much misogyny."
I'm sorry...did...did you come to this book blurbed as "#MeToo #Resist" and think we were just gonna magically skip what created the need for those movements? OF COURSE THERE'S MISOGYNY! YOU READ THE START OF THE BOOK WHERE THE FUCKED UP WORLD SHIT WAS BEING SET UP!

Holy hell-this is my shit-world and political building. As someone who keeps repeatedly reading different fantasies that seem to be the exact same damn thing, this was different but also familiar. By that I mean all the crap that is finally being acknowledged in our world that have been and are done to women is brought up here. It's set in this fantasy world but took all these contemporary modern issues and messed with it. I was a little concerned going in that this would be a very men vs. women sort of message but nope! There are men on both sides which was wonderful! All of the female characters were intelligent and connected but had distinct story lines. They come from different generations + countries/kingdoms and yet they all are shoved into these spots of "give me an heir or divorce and we prostitute you." That continuously stuck with me along with the fact that women are trying to raise up other women in this which is another big key thing.
The magic system was extremely interesting. While we get a bit of information about the magic structure, it's importance is more the figurative power the System has to shift (and boy oh boy do I mean SHIFT) the power structure of this world. It's the essential sacrifice that people made for this System and how it will play a role in the geopolitics of multiple kingdoms AND THE FACT THAT WOMEN ARE BEING ELEVATED BECAUSE OF IT. This was so incredibly fascinating and I cannot wait to see what happens. I can feel like there's going to be this massive magical explosion in the next book. Feel it in my bones!.
Random thought...why do I enjoy books that have abbeys? It's such a weird thing but I always seem to be trash for books with them
The ending BROKE ME. Like Christ why did that have to go down?! I am absolutely going to be picking up the sequel once it gets released.

I wanna go slap a "nice guy in the friend zone" and burn down something created by sexist white man.
But legit this is a HILARIOUS, honest and modern plot about a girl getting slut shamed for having a vagina and using it. For reals, I don't like contemporaries but this has a really satisfying ending...and I wanna go burn down the patriarchy now.

y'all do not even comprehend how relieved I am that this didn't suck. I've been let down so many times by series wrap ups but this was so satisfying to me! SO DAMN SATISFYING! This is easily one of my fav series ever.

I'm sorry...but I've had to come to accept that I just can't get into Kiersten White's writing.
Agh! It took my forever to finally get to this but I did! Now I think in comparison to book 1, I preferred book 1 a bit more but not by much. There is SO MUCH political and social maneuvering going on for this whole book which leads up to the pure chaos of the emperor being usurped. Maybe that's how to explain this book: pure organized but frantic political chaos.
I loved that Jean Claude got more developed and we saw him as the father figure but as well as his own human who has a history and who has definitely changed over the decades. Isabelle is kind of a bad ass in this book and OH! MY! GOD! HALLELUJAH! THERE IS STILL NO POWERFUL ROMANCE OVERSHADOWING HER PLOT! HELL YES! THANK YOU SIR!

This had a lot of elements I enjoyed but it fell a bit short on plot. I can only explain it like...you know how the second book in a lot of series is a smaller conflict that helps move forward a larger conflict/plot of a series? This book feels like that smaller conflict so as a standalone, it was a bit too simple for my tastes.
