I wasn't totally sure what to expect from this book but it was so weird in a good way. the powers seemed so normal in the society (not massive fantasy vibes with the history even though it was there.) I'm so interested in all the different powers! Keep trying to decide which one I would want. I really loved Evelyn but I found the male leads to be almost interchangable making it hard to keep them as separate characters.

I AM OBSESSED WITH THIS BOOK! It's like if Magnito or Umbridge ran an institution of people with powers in Victorian England and then threw in the Red Wedding.

This book convinced me that if I had a super power...I'd want it to be that everyone would have to truthfully answer my questions. The trolling and blackmail material you could get with that!

The romance...spider web? is absolutely amazing and I just want more of it! I am so incredibly excited for the third book!

Nooooooooo!!!!!!!!
That sound you hear is my heart breaking!....

I need to read the sequel like now!

The world sucked me in. I loved the characters and the politics and the distinction between the world's and the conspiracies and the romance! God-- *hiccups* the romance...

WHY MUST I FEEL?!

Holy hell! My emotions!

Holy crap. This book was better than the first. It's thick but it's nonstop action and everything has a purpose. It's the equivalent of a villain story for fairytales and fairytale retellings. SO FREAKING GOOD! I cringed everytime Jaxon said dating or sweetheart but I did not see that ending coming! I loved the new setting and world of thieves. the details of everyone's magic was so cool and was such a natural part of London. There was just so much to this story!

🌍World building on world building on world building.

👥Character development on character development on character development.

⚠️Problems on problems on problems.

🙈🙉🙊Backstabbing on backstabbing on backstabbing.

Holy hell, this book was freaking fantastic!

I will admit that the first few chapters were a little slow and I kept thinking "is anything actually going to happen?" I am so glad I pushed through that because this is one of my favourite reads of the year so far.

Rowan and Citra were both really likeable and interesting characters on their own but their relationship and kind of romance was also really interesting to root for. They're never given an opportunity for that relationship to become anything and that's why I found it such a refreshing situation. The ending when Scythe Anastasia punches Rowan and then they say "I love you" made me gasp and smile saying "why is that my #relationshipgoals?!"

There's a bit of violence here but the I feel like the words and dialogue were so much more impactful. when Citra explained her reasoning for choosing the name Anastasia (which my inner Russian history nerd adored) I wanted to stand up and start a slow clap. The ending journal entry by her also made my heart freeze for a second.

I am forever now going to tell people to "Go glean yourself."

I couldn't help but laugh and love the use of the conferences/big meetings as time markers since this is literally how I function in my professional life.

My jaw dropped and I wanted to again start a slow clap when the last conference made a massive blatently obvious comment and reference to pro-gun advocates and their arguments.

I feel like I'm a reader who picks up on breadcrumbs and tend to figure out "shocking twists" like five chapters before they happen. All three of the ties/getting around the "You must glean the loser" totally shocked me! The end with Citra/Anastasia punching Rowan made me gasp and it was freaking brilliant!

Lastly, I like to think of myself as a good person but I'm also someone who can hold a grudge and be petty so I feel like I could have taken on the duties of a Scythe--and I wouldn't have used it to burn down a religious institution like some douche bag in this book--but I don't know that I'm honest enough to be unbiased.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Do Jay Kristoff and Neal Shusterman have a group chat where they laugh maniacly about torturing readers?! SO NOT COOL!

Omg this was better than the first one

rating: 4.5/5 stars

Put simply, I read this 400 page book in one sitting over about 7 hours...Couldn't put it down...Plus the physical book is so beautiful!

Omg this book made me feel! I love Nikolai so much...And I want to kill Pasha's sister and...Kinda high five Nikolai's mom. This book appeased the historical fiction lover, the former history student, romance lover and magic lover in me!

So I did enjoy this book but not even remotely as much as the first book and it really is obvious that this was written by a new/debut-ish author. The beauty of the first book was the romance and magic in the backdrop of Russia but this book had a very different feel. I am a big lover of politics and historical events within fiction but I have a problem with the happily ever after ending...after the characters spent the whole book trying to kill each other...and had an attempted coup...in Russia. All the characters can't get over any problems throughout the book but then ALL of a sudden at the end, they suddenly decide to put their differences aside?

I absolutely HATE Pasha's sister who came off as the villain to me but nothing happens to her to the point where I don't quite know why she was even required in the story. I really enjoyed the concept of building a rebellion but Skye either edited out WAYYYYYY too much of just wrote that part of the story very lazily. There were a few things that were just glossed over and never really solved which once again made me think "well why did you even bring this up if you aren't going to do anything with it? This is the last book in the duology."

The hardcovers are super gorgeous and I may reread this duology in the future when I want a romancey fantasy book set in Russia and I will definitely keep an eye out for more of Skye's work but she definitely needs to work on a more fulfilling, creative and complete conclusion.

sad and beautiful

I really enjoyed these stories! I am not a big fan of short stories and novellas but I wanted to give this a try because:
a. look at that cover
b. women in history

While these stories are fiction, the authors have done research and taken real people and events which they mixed and morphed into their stories. I really didn't know anything about these events and time periods so it was a really cool experience.

This book is jammed FULL of diversity! Not just the women but sexual orientation, race, class system, etc. You would not believe how hard it is to find fictional books with indigenous characters that are not about residential schools. While they are only a couple of the stories with this representation and they are relatively small roles...it's a start to get them more representation in fiction and YA.

My rating is lower simply because they were short stories. I would've enjoyed some of these to be fleshed out more or made into a stand alone. As soon as I would get into a story, it had an abrupt end which I tend to find annoying. For that reason, I used the audiobook to follow along to.

I think the topics covered and the short length will make me want to re-read this book every once and a while and pass along to my children if I ever have some.
