I loved this story about a young mixed race couple in the 30's. The story was broken up by alternating chapters about the past and the present. I usually don't like the present day stories as much, but in this case they really helped break up the past and build the emotion of the story. While I had a vague idea where the story was going, I still really enjoyed it and I definitely recommend this.

I didn't like this as much as I had hoped. The characters were not likeable. There's a nasty rape central to the story. And I didn't feel compelled to keep reading. Gone Girl also had despicable characters, but that story hooked me in a way this did not.

The timeline jumps around a lot, and it was a little confusing at first and then became a little annoying. I got a little tired of all the missed chances and misunderstandings after a while. It was a good story though, and I liked the ending.

This is a really good book. It's hard not to respect Serena even though she's a horrible person. I read reviews that mention a twist at the end. I really wouldn't call it a twist because I could guess what was going to happen, but it's still a great ending. Fair warning: it's a gritty story with quite a bit of violence.
