If you aren’t well versed on the history of policing in various communities and the US as a whole, this will give you so much to think about. I love how this book is organized, with each chapter exploring a different topic/role police play and why it is not just ineffective but often downright harmful and damaging. This is definitely written to be persuasive and not unbiased, but despite that I learned so much. Very well organized, researched, and thoughtful.

This is how I wish I had been taught American history in school... and it explains why it wasn’t. For anyone (white) looking to grow and educate yourself about what the issues are that have led to recent protests, this is an incredibly insightful read. I’m ashamed of how well the system works to delude us as children and young adults. I’m ashamed at how well I’ve been duped. I’m determined to do better.
