This probably should be more like a 3, but I’m too big a fan of Atkinson’s work for that. This had a strange ending, imo, and at one point a character says that’s enough exposition, and I thought “no, no, I definitely need some more exposition”.
Anyhow, I liked the writing, the setting, I learned a lot more things about England during WWII and the espionage going on, and probably, much like “Life After Life”, I’ll read it again and discover all these things I didn’t notice the first time.

This is one of the best books I’ve ever read. I found it thrilling, I was filled with joy reading it. Her linguist analysis is, of course, excellent, but she also includes a little bit of internet history, so I learned a lot, and she approaches her subject with such enthusiasm and hope that it made me hopeful.
Wow, this book was a slog for me, but also...had good writing and beautiful descriptions and at the end I kind of liked it?
I have no idea. I might reread someday and my opinion change but for now is 3 for the sheer effort it took to get through

Am feeling a little disappointed, I feel like this book missed a big chance for lots of interesting plot elements. All these Doors, all these possible worlds, could have been great! Instead we just get glimpses and the last half of the novel gets really bogged down with unnecessary supernatural and expositional stuff. Just felt like a missed opportunity for some cool storytelling and world-building, which the author is obviously great at, I could totally picture the few worlds we get to see, but I just think it would’ve been more interesting with more of that/adventure and less of the main character being stuck somewhere miserable and explaining things.
