I really appreciated how the topics were laid out and built on each other, and the author has done a ton of research to provide informative and moving history. The educational structure of the book is helpful and she provides great suggestions and response questions.
Also I enjoyed the bonus of the personal stories she offered--she certainly didn't have to offer up her own life for a book but because she did I was able to learn a lot from her personal experiences and family stories

this book was pretty good, but I also think it could've done with more marinating and revising before it got released--it reads a lot like if I'd been allowed to write a book my first year of seminary. I also think some more research and broader reading wouldn't have gone amiss (there are indeed already people who have analyzed and felt sympathy for Judas Iscariot, including, of all people, Karl Barth).
what I did really like was her expression of anger, her connections to Jacob, and what I most liked was when she analyzed what it meant that she lied a lot as a kid and then looped that back around to what it means to try and be a truth-teller now.
it's not bad and it's a quick read, but I think a revised version in a few years will have more to offer

To be fair to him, Tim Alberta 1)is a reporter, so he's gonna write like a reporter and 2)does lay out his whole family and personal background at first so he's not acting like he didn't come out of this segment of Christianity. But this man has got some daddy issues that crop up in his constant need to tell us why his dad was different than yknow every other conservative evangelical male pastor 🙄 and he is also WAY too sympathetic towards all these folks. I would have liked more analysis and examination, rather than kind of long interviews and numerous quotations from people he either talks to or listens to.
Also I feel like if he'd talked sooner to some women, and people of color, and if he'd talked to any queer people, and people who have got through the deconstruction process, it would've made the whole book more interesting. But he gets 3 stars for at least doing this kind of work, calling stuff out for being wrong, knowing scripture and citing it well, and displaying some righteous anger when needed.

Really excellent! A thorough and well-researched history, and the way she lays out the history and connections is really well done. I learned a lot and also had a lot confirmed that I had suspected was true. Possibly even more relevant now than in 2020

This is only a few years old and yet it did NOT age well 😬😬😬
Her basic points are solid but her examples and people she uses as inspiration are def steeped in the mid-2010s

I'm guessing the publishers pushed her to have a catchy title. This is more a reflection on the roots of Christian Nationalism and the elements of it currently, not so much advice on ending it
