So happy I got introduced to this series!!
Our main character Nona winds up at St Mercy, home of nuns and assassins in training. Having been giving up by her village and family she knows not what to expect here. She’s grown up in what you could call a “sheltered” world, one where she’s known the cruelty of humanity but not the extent.
Brought to St Mercy by unfortunate circumstances, she believes she’s here by mistake. But there’s shelter and plenty of food, so Nona takes classes, makes friends and some enemies, thinking maybe she’s finally made it. Things have to be better than what she’s endured. Until her past life coincides with her present. And she learns enemies are far and wide, and revenge is most dangerous when it festers; especially when coupled with a fat purse.
I loved Nona Grey. Her spunk, her quick tempter and tongue made her relatable. You couldn’t help but feel sorry her a bit but admire the person she wanted to be. Filled with friendship, betrayal, and of course some politicking, Red Sister was a book I unexpectedly loved! Lovers of Nevernight or books that speak of places teaching the next would be assassins of the world would be intrigued by this!!

What do a stolen dress, an overheard conversation, and a mercenary for hire have in common? Two words; Finlay Donovan.
Finlay Donovan is a woman at the end of her wits. A divorced mother of 2 as well as a struggling author, she has to contend with nosy neighbors, a good for nothing ex husband and his fiancé, and of course, writer’s block.
Things take a turn for Finlay the day she meets up with her agent at Panera and a misheard conversation has someone thinking Fin is a mercenary for hire. While trying to correct the misheard conversation, she unintentionally takes the job and all of a sudden she’s now living the life of the heroine in her novel.
Joined by her kids’ babysitter, Vera, they both make cringeworthy but also hilarious decisions that make you root for them but also wonder what on earth they’re doing. Looking forward to the next book in the series and seeing what trouble they get into next!
Finlay Donovan Is Killing It is out February 2nd, 2021. Thank you to Netgalley, St. Martin’s Press, and Minotaur Books for an arc of the book!

The Collector is about a man who goes around having others killed for secrets he wants to keep hidden. His primary motivator is priceless artifacts, some of which he has gotten through ill means. Lucy O’Hara is a disgraced cop, a mother, and a daughter, who is assigned to catch him after the death of Philip Carlton brings her into the case. Lucy finds herself traveling the world of the rich, where you tread carefully, lest you find yourself out of a job. But the closer she comes to finding out who the killer is, the more people die, and the more in danger her and her daughter are.
I truly liked the plot of this book but I found it to be slow at times. I couldn’t connect well with Lucy which was sad because I liked her backstory from what I was told. I wish the author had expanded on that as well Lucy’s relationship with her daughter.
The ending of the book wasn’t quite what I expected. Although we find out who the killer is, their motives weren’t quite clearly/fully explained. This was an interesting read but it didn’t quite have enough for me to love it.
Thank you to John Maher, Inkubator Books, and NetGalley for this arc!

Why?
This is a question asked numerous times in this book and for a good reason. Why are so many black youths and adults dying with no rhyme or reason? Why can’t justice be served? Why do we keep fighting for justice even though there seems to be no hope?
In the year 2020, racism is still alive and well. The killing of black people is still alive and well. How do we explain it to our kids and our youths? Michael W. Waters wrote this about the conversations he had with his son Jeremiah as he grew up. It’s a guide, if you will, of how to approach this conversation with kids. Of how to tell them the truth without scaring them but also without lying to them.
Although this is a children’s book, the message goes beyond. The message that racism has no place. That we are more than the color of our skin. That we will not stop fighting until there is equality.

A weekend retreat for a bookclub gone wrong.
When 6 ladies converge on a country estate for a weekend, murder is far from their minds. At least literally speaking. Until the next day when they find the dead body of a fortune teller they had met the night before. But with the snowstorm, there’s no way to get to the village and get help. And with no phones in the house, no way to communicate with the outside world. They’re cut off. But the fortune teller isn’t the only one that meets an untimely death and now the group has to wonder who’s picking them off one by one.
What a fascinating mix of characters! They weren’t all likable, in fact I wanted to smack most of them half the time. But they each had distinct personalities that stood out and mixed/clashed well with the others. I was confused about who could have committed the murders because I thought they were all capable.
The book did drag at times but it had a creep factor I enjoyed. Overall, it had enjoyable/hateable/interesting characters but I wasn’t too keen on how the book progressed and tied up at the end. The culprit wasn’t who I thought it was and the reasoning given just didn’t feel right.

When James asks Amelia out, it’s like someone else took his place and did so. And to his surprise she says yes and a date is set with a canoe trip. But little did they know that they’d end up finding a house at the bottom of a lake. A house that continuously draws them back, nearly consuming their every waking moment. Why is the house there? Why has no one else discovered it? And why does it seem to be perfectly intact beneath the water?
I found this book strange but intriguing at the same time. It felt as though there was a supernatural element to it that I wanted to know more about. The ending was open ended and left the reader to come to his/her own conclusion.
