Might be petty, but knocked down an extra half-star because the MMC is an OSU alum. I was 5 minutes into my 5 hour drive and I have to hear about Columbus, Ohio as a highlight. Also, OSU has a great football team (I will never not admit that), but their hockey team isn't that great... They are in the same league as Minnesota, Michigan, MSU, and Wisconsin. They have only been in the Frozen Four twice and in the course of their history, only a handful of players have even made it to the NHL. Not a great team to have as the background for your all-star NHL hockey MMC. But whatever.

It was good for my long drive, but I am not a big fan of the miscommunication trope as the big issue with adult novels. This book could have been 2/3 of the length if they just talked to each other and stopped assuming everything.

There were also some details that I felt the author REALLY wanted me to know that I definitely always remembered (how many times do you have to tell me that they both wear golden rings????), so it got repetitive to me.

Loved the representation about family dynamics and generational trauma, including setting boundaries and cutting people out when necessary. Also loved the found family aspect of this book with the Madisons. Super cute dynamics there.

I also really liked the timeline. I felt that it was realistic in how long things sometimes take between people and not instantaneous like we see in a lot of other romance novels.

I did not like the MMC for a lot of this book. It felt like childhood crush that bullies because they think it's cute but did it as an adult, and I just don't like enforcing that narrative in general for the reasoning of "she was doing her job and I was a jerk, she put me in my place so she's a brat and i'm going to make her life miserable." Grow up. BUT I did like that he goes to therapy regularly and wants to provide the same for kids in Chicago. Loved that.

I guess my takeaway is that I was very hot and cold for this one. So it doesn't really stand out to me personally because of my preferences when reading, and my pettiness in the rivalry. Go Blue lol
