The Friend Zone

Abby Jimenez

DID NOT FINISH: 10%

I've loved the rest of Abby's books. What I can't get past is the repeated, very thinly veiled sexism in the first 10% of this book. The implication that all period havers are crazy during their period is ridiculous and inaccurate.

It doesn't happen often that I just can't finish a book. This was one of the exceptions. The MC came off as a huge snob and that just totally turned me off. This book might be someone's cup of tea but it definitely wasn't mine.

The Last Black Unicorn

I listened to a good portion of the audiobook and decided not to finish it. The chapter about her coworker bothered me very much and I just couldn’t listen to her imitation of his voice anymore. I don’t know what made her think describing the sex in detail needed to be done, but it wasn’t. Their were parts that were funny and other parts that made me feel like this wasn’t a book for me.

I got about 31% of the way through the audiobook and I just stopped. I keep trying to get back into it and I can’t. I’m sure this book is great, I just don’t care. I don’t feel like I can escape into this story at all and that’s something I really look for in a book. So I’m just done trying to force myself to finish. Not worth it.

DNF at 62%. It seems small, but I can't get over how many times Harry Potter is mentioned in this book. I wanted to like this book, which is why I kept reading, even after I started questioning whether or not I wanted to. Also, the relationship feels flat, like I'm not really rooting for them at all? I don't care if they end up together or not at this point. So it's a DNF, unfortunately.

Love on the Brain

Sigh. I wanted to like this book. I enjoyed The Love Hypothesis. But I can't get past the 78% mark. For being a genius neuroscientist, Bee is just really...not very smart. I want to scream every time Levi says something and she assumes he's lying or something. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to let go of my thinking that Ali would be one of the authors whose work I would read all of because this and the novella I attempted are just. Not. It.
