When a comet threatens to destroy the Earth, a group of scientists and their families are selected to colonize a new planet. Petra Pena has always wanted to be a storyteller like her grandmother and hopes to carry on this tradition on a new planet. However, it will take hundreds of years for them to arrive at the new planet so they must all be put in a cryogenic sleep in order to survive but not everything goes to plan during this sleep.

Booktalk:

Threads That Bind is great for anyone who likes mysteries and Percy Jackson. The premise is that the gods, Greek gods in this case, are long dead but their descendants still live. This story follows Io who is descended from the Fates and is what is known as a cutter. This means that she is the one who cuts the threads of life. She is working as a private investigator and is hired to look into a case where women are being abducted and having their life threads maimed which turns them into wraiths. These blood thirsty wraiths are being let loose to kill at will. She has to team up with Edei, a boy who she shares her own fate thread with and who works for the city's Mob Queen. This book is really fast paced although it does take a few chapters to get going. Once it does, it doesn't stop and it takes you on quite the roller coaster of who-dun-it.

Booktalk:

Saints of the Household by Ari Tison is a realistic novel about two brothers struggling with an abusive father and an uncertain future. Max and Jay, who live in rural Minnesota, have both been suspended from their high school after they violently beat up Luca, the school’s golden boy soccer captain. That fight started when the brothers defended Nicole, a friend of theirs, from potential abuse by Luca, but almost no one knows the secret background of what caused the boys to jump in and aggressively defend the young woman. That secret is this: at home, their father is incredibly physically abusive toward their mother, and they’ve felt powerless to help. Their suspension from school and the fallout from the fight causes the brothers to react differently. In alternating points of view, we see Max’s world through verse as he looks to the future at art school. Jay is more traditionally book smart, and through narrative prose we see him struggle with leaving his mother alone when both brothers potentially leave for college. This is a story of shared abuse and trauma, self discovery, and reconciliation.
