A modern day “Christmas Carol” with a twist, where Scrooge IS the ghost instead of being visited by them. I loved every bit of this story. TJ Klune does a tremendous job of bringing the reader into the lives of his characters and making you root for some pretty unloveable characters. Heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time, this is a tremendous story of grace and redemption.

This was a fun YA fantasy novel. If you’re looking for an easy read with action and suspense and a bit of romance, it’s a great choice. Don’t take it too seriously as the characters are somewhat shallow, especially considering their circumstances,  but overall it was an enjoyable escape read. I enjoyed it enough to put the rest of the series on my kindle for the next time I need a fast-paced read to escape into.

Mary Katherine is so… relatable. She’s honest about the messes in her life, and takes the time to laugh heartily at herself. This is a great book to read if you’re feeling like the rest of the world has it all together (spoiler alert:they don’t).

The book reads more like a collection of stories without necessarily being connected together, but that’s not entirely a bad thing. It’s fun to pick up a chapter for a chuckle, kind of like getting a funny message from a friend. It’s not all laughs, and the seriousness of some of Mary Katherine’s story can be heartbreaking at times, but somehow still encouraging. I really enjoyed this book and I so appreciate her heartfelt telling of her story. It really felt like chatting with a friend over coffee and Mary Katherine is definitely a friend I’d like to have.
