One of the few cases where the movie is better. Though there are some changes made in the film that almost seem to be an inside joke with those who have read the book.
Joan's complaints about her husband and men in general, while entirely warrented and not anything I disagree with, are incredibly repetitive. Almost shallow in a strange way.
Her complaints about other women are just downright hateful. The internalized misogyny is frustrating, especially since it goes almost entirely unexamined.
There is an utterly bizarre disdain for Finland, its people, and its culture, that goes throughout the book.
The prose is largely good. It is sometimes beautiful. At other times it is very try-hard.
It wasn't a particularly enjoyable read, though it wasn't really bad either. As I said at the beginning, the film is probably the best way to experience this story

Iron Widow is....it's...it's just so good! I feel bad for the rest of the books I'll read this year cause this is a hard act to follow.
I might come back and give this a proper review later. Right now my brain is just screaming over how good it is

I normally avoid romances and comedies. Nothing against them, just really not my genres. So I don't know what it is that compelled me to pick up a romantic comedy of all things. But I am so glad I did!
I could not put this book down. I was entirely hooked from the first sentence. The humor had me literally laughing out loud. Every single character is adorable, and if I could, I'd marry them all. I wish there had been more time spent with the party's rogue, Lila, but every moment we did get with her was gold, which explains why she constantly stole the scene.
And if you're looking for a queer book, this is a capital Q Queer book. If you loved the bisexual-free-for-all of Dragon Age 2, you'll love this. Multiple characters with multi-gender attractions, gender neutral characters, poly characters, a beautiful emphasis on found family....I really can't list how completely and wonderfully queer it is.
So many romance tropes are represented. Friends to Lovers, Enemies to Lovers, Insta-love, Opposites Attract, love pollen ("It wasn't a lust pollen!"), trapped together. Probably a lot more that I didn't pick up on because I don't read a lot of romance.
My favorite book of the year, hands down. Please do yourself a favor and read this book. You'll be so happy you did.
