Well dam. I loved that. I've been eagerly scouring the Web and bookstagram for a decent slasher when multiple friends said "you should check out some of Christopher Robertsons stuff." And I was not disappointed.
This had everything I wanted and so much more. I felt like it was written directly for me. It had the feel of a 90s horror film (literally) and I loved every second. It was both a little cheesy but not cringy, amd full of nolstalgia. The fact this wasn't your average slasher, that it spinned tropes on its head and had multiple stuff and dangers going on aside from the undead man in a mask was so refreshing. I couldn't put it down and was constantly thinking of it all week. It only took me so long to read because, work. Adulting. Le sigh.
I fell in love with these characters so much. The felt like a real friendship group, it was so easy to picture them together. Their dialogue and banter had me in stitches and i saw a young me in Caleb. Even the side characters and antagonist had meaning and added to the story and didn't feel like they were just dumped in to up the body count.
The fact it was written like you were watching a movie playing out with the "cut to's and such," was a little jarring at first but once I got used to it, it flowed so effortlessly and really made this a special read. It was like actually being in a horror film instead of watching it
It was such a thrilling ride that got me in my emotions and by the end I was tearing up. It was horrific and bloody, touching and bittersweat, and riddled with twists. I bought some of Kit's other works and cannot wait to dive in, and if your like me and love some good old Slasher films like Scream and Friday the 13th, then this is a MUST READ IMMEDIATELY for you. It is Halloween after all.
I've read alot of books marketed as "teen slasher," and always have been disappointed, but Virgin Night has broken the curse and is now my holy grail.
And I was absolutely living for the Dead by Daylight reference. Hello, fellow fog whisperer, I see you.
