This is a great collection of stuff I probably wouldn't otherwise have read. Some of it seemed like filler (lists, etc) but mostly it was an enjoyable read.
Disappointing :( I loved Heartbreaking Work, and this, sir, is no Heartbreaking Work.
I feel like this book is an underachieving student. Has potential! Needs improvement! The characters and the concept were both theoretically interesting, and yet I never really cared too much.
Perhaps my expectations were too high? I did enjoy reading it. I finished it. To quote Avril, this book is like so whatever.

i adored this book. smart and funny and sweet and sad and ETC.
Just noticed that I hadn't reviewed this, either. Anyway, as with [book:Assassination Vacation], I didn't give it five stars just because I didn't like it as much as [book:The Partly Cloudy Patriot]. But it's still great! I like her the best when she writes about history, so I suppose I liked this book less than PCP because sometimes she writes about things that AREN'T HISTORY. Which you may prefer, in fact.
Ohhhhhh. I want to read this again just to savor it. But I treasure the memory of reading it, of tasting each word and each moment of this book.
I love Sarah Vowellllll so much. Also the audio book of this is hilarious.
I only gave it four stars though because I don't want to devalue the star system, and I didn't like it as much as I liked Partly Cloudy Patriot.
But really, Sarah Vowell is great. She is so smart and passionate and funny and nerdy.

A clever, interesting, and humane look at the way the Civil War is remembered in America. Horwitz also gets at deeper issues of race in America. Also, it's pretty funny.
Again, I just wanted to pick one from the series for the ALL TIME FAVORITE list. They are all awesome, though. I love the entire series' use of humor and bizarre media criticism. Teach the kids to distrust authority early-on! Plus I love Kevin the Ambidextrous freak.
this is probably my favorite book ever and sarah vowell is my role model.
