lovvvvvve this! It's so sharp and funny and such a good follow-up to New Kid. Great for fans of Raina, etc, and of COURSE for the legions of kids who already read and loved New Kid.
This isn't necessarily the kind of thing I'd normally gravitate toward, but I checked it out (full disclosure because the author is a guest on an upcoming episode of our podcast!) I think this concept will appeal to a lot of teens, and I found it to be a fun, fast-paced book that wasn't TOO gory. It is a little silly if you stop to think about it, so maybe, like, don't?
Overall I really enjoyed this anthology! As is my general MO I preferred the funnier stories to the darker ones, but there's something here for everyone, and as the title promises, it's great to see some fresh stories that represent a wider spectrum of humanity and, uh, vampirity? Anyway I'd love a full book of Julie Murphy's queer cheerleader/slayer and the new vampire girl in town.
This is a great realistic middle grade story about the hard work that goes into being a young competitive figure skater as well as the hard work that goes into being strong in the face of microagressions at school. I really loved Maxine's arc and especially the way she deals with her own jealousy of a new skater compared to the way the racist mean boy at school deals with his issues, and I appreciated that it's a story about bullying where the moral isn't "but also the bully was sad and what about his feelings"?
OK fine whatever I guess 2020 is the year I get deep into weird DC stuff. Seriously though, this book is beautiful, both in terms of art and also of the story.
Yo, this book holds up.

I hope that this is going to end up being a novella cycle (like [b:Binti: The Complete Trilogy|40382407|Binti The Complete Trilogy|Nnedi Okorafor|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1535553295l/40382407._SY75_.jpg|62682909]), because I kind of felt like it ended just when I was getting into it. It's a cool premise and worldbuilding but it left me wanting more! Which is a good thing except....I want more!
I'm generally not too bothered by things that are "unrealistic" in fiction or like, you know, when fictional science doesn't hold up or whatever, but I had to DNF this book before even finishing the first chapter due to
1) bad LIBRARY science!! the main character is supposed to be a head children's librarian who seems TERRIBLE at her job. but in a way where the book thinks she's good at her job.
2) the love interest is a cop?! in 2020?!
MEG. I'm disappointed. HRH Mia Thermopolis would never.

this was fine? I feel like I'm coming to understand that I like the Legends of Tomorrow version of Constantine better than the comics version which is like, way grittier and less goofy. And obv some folks are into grit! But not me.
But I loved the montage of him handling responses to his KregList ad for "Very Handsome Exorcist, Will Solve Spookiest Problems" and then getting called to exorcise a raccoon. Incredible, would love a whole book of that nonsense!!

This grandmother-grandson roadtrip is a really interesting premise, and it definitely kept me turning the pages! I'm still sort of chewing on the ending--there's a big reveal and then things seem to wind up too quickly to me, but nevertheless I think a lot of tweens will enjoy the mystery of it and learn a little bit about the Green Book. I think in a classroom or book club setting there would be MUCH to discuss here.
