Managed to get nearly halfway through the book and it felt like nothing really happened except a significant lore drop that happened may 40% in and the intro of a character that I hope would liven things up but did nothing to make things more exciting or interesting. It's a shame because these characters do seem interesting, I just wish they were part of a more captivating plot.

Such a strong start to what promises to be an immersive, vast, and wonderfully queer story. The art style of this comic is right up my alley and I love all the messages and avenues this first volume goes. My interest was piqued right from the cover, not letting up for even a page as I started. Definitely for those who love fantasy worlds that are uniquely built and house an array of likeable and engaging characters.

When Night Breaks serves as a great continuation and mirror to the events that happened in its previous installment. The stakes seemed higher, we're introduced to some more engaging characters, as well as seeing more development of some from the first book. I was glad to see Jack get more focus, as I was curious as to what his whole deal was. His arc was fascinating and I think it's what tied me to the story the most.
I enjoyed the darker story told here, though at times I started to get lost in the plot, especially when it came to certain elements of the mirror world. It was easy to forget certain things, like how the mirrors worked or what they could do. There are chapters that are a slog to get through, but by the second half things begin to really pick up.
I was glad that the story strayed away from the standard love triangle and fully committed to Kallia and Demarco's relationship, even though they spend very little time actually together in this book.
While probably not the most high-tier YA fantasy, I still enjoyed this series and found the ending satisfying and bittersweet. It felt well earned and a natural way to close the curtain so to speak. I would recommend this series to those that love theatrical stories with a mysterious underbelly.

Such a cute art style paired with an emotionally resonating story. Perfect for teaching kids how to recognize and come to terms with their emotions, especially feelings of grief, loneliness, and invisibility.

This is my first time checking out Octavia Butler's writing and, after finishing Fledgling, I'm thinking maybe I should have started with Kindred or Parable of the Sower. While this book has a great setup and an interesting take on vampire lore, there's just a lot of stuff that made it hard to read, namely the slight pedophilia. Sure, Shori is technically 53 years old, but when you start wandering into technicality areas in that kind of conversation, you know you're going the wrong way. I don't see a narrative reason why Shori has to look twelve years old, or why she couldn't have at least looked older. The consent between her and her symbionts is a bit muddied as well, so combining the two makes for real uncomfortable reading at times.
If there was a word to sum up this book, it would be abrupt, both in the plot and the writing style. Everything seemed so choppy and I wish it was able to flow a little better.

The book had a promising start but from the halfway point on it just started getting messy and meandering. The end sets itself up for a sequel, but it feels disappointing to have no resolution at all for anything that happens. It felt like characters' allegiances were changing at the drop of a hat and it was difficult to keep up with, along with the numerous villains that come and go. All in all, it's a case of trying to cram too much into one book, where plot threads abound but ultimately go on forever so you have to read a potential sequel to have closure on literally everything.
