There are stories that expertly intertwine their stories with a sense of humor that accent the story, giving it it's own vibe and charm. And then there's ones like Kill the Farm Boy where the humor IS the story, which is a problem when you find the majority of the jokes painfully unfunny. I'm not a big fan of body humor and some of the jokes drag on for far too long, case in point, the chapter long dick joke with the forced breeding implications.

Yeah, kind of hard to go on after that. This story is bound to appeal to someone's sense of humor, it's just not going to be mine.

Just wasn't feeling the vibe or tone of the story. Was hoping for something a little more creepy.

I'm sorry to say that this is probably the mostly deeply unpleasant book I've read in a while. Halfway through the book and the only things that really happen are that the main character and her brother are bullied RELENTLESSLY and lose their parents to a curse. The book tries to ease the blow of all of this through uplifting talks of magic, but really you can't really come back from a scene where the main character gets her hair cut by a bully, steals his scissors and then proceeds to cut the rest of her hair off and throw it at him, fueled by trauma and sadness. I was initially drawn in by the gorgeous cover and promise of a magic circus, but unfortunately the story falls incredibly flat and there's absolute nothing that makes me want to continue.

DNF @ 28%. Way too much going on and the combination of many different mythologies and lores was too much to keep up with, especially since the style of the story didn't lend itself to much explanation. 

Managed to get nearly halfway through the book and it felt like nothing really happened except a significant lore drop that happened may 40% in and the intro of a character that I hope would liven things up but did nothing to make things more exciting or interesting. It's a shame because these characters do seem interesting, I just wish they were part of a more captivating plot.

Didn't feel like finishing as there was nothing tying me to the story. Every element of the book felt somewhat hollow, the characters, the plot, the historical elements, nothing really made me want to keep reading, especially since I was more than halfway into this magic book which had very little magic by that point. The style makes it very easy to read, but I didn't want to read just for reading's sake. The herbalism was an interesting aspect, but it wasn't enough to fully invest me. 

Covers the first couple episodes of the Hilda TV series, so I didn't want to read a story I was already familiar with. Good for those that haven't been exposed to the show yet.

Too slow paced, nearly halfway through the book and there isn't even an inkling of conflict and the doey eyed romance angle sparks cheesy Hallmark flick vibes, which really isn't for me. The dialogue is a bit ridiculous at times, to the point where I was either constantly eye rolling or gagging. The one thing I appreciated was that the author at least attempted to make the relationship between Beth and Xavier not too awkward with a ridiculous age gap that comes with pairing humans with typically immortal beings, but then went right ahead trying to set up a Molly/Gabriel thing that just rubs me the wrong way for multiple reasons.  

Too slow-paced, not enough character development or insight beyond basic backgrounds. A good, promising premise, but unfortunately it doesn't deliver. I do appreciate its historical aspect, as well as it having a Jewish main character that we actually see practice her religion, which I rarely find in books. Still, there wasn't enough to hold my interest.

I really tried with this one, I really did. There's nothing objectively wrong with the story, I just have a difficult time reading hard science fiction, as it's not usually my genre. I made it nearly halfway into the book and I had yet to connect with any of the characters or their plights. The writing style didn't leave an impression on me and overall came off as bland and void of any gripping quality. The pace is incredibly slow, to the point where it feels like the characters keep repeating their goals and motivations and generally fumble around until plot happens. I'm sure this will be someone's favorite book, but it really didn't do anything for me.
