I review books for Rachel Reading. Check it out!

So, I am totally obsessed with [b:Gone Girl|21480930|Gone Girl|Gillian Flynn|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1432019852s/21480930.jpg|13306276]. It's obvious, and whenever people ask me what to read next I usually ask, "Have you read [b:Gone Girl|21480930|Gone Girl|Gillian Flynn|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1432019852s/21480930.jpg|13306276] yet?" So any time someone talks to me about it, I immediately remembered that I needed to finish Dark Places.

This book was good, and has everything I love in fiction books, twists and turns, cults (I have a whole shelf on Goodreads for cults) and a good old whodunit like I'm watching "The First 48" or "Law and Order SVU"

It wasn't Gone Girl, but I'm not sure if anything CAN be [b:Gone Girl|21480930|Gone Girl|Gillian Flynn|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1432019852s/21480930.jpg|13306276], but Gillian Flynn is a master, that's for sure. Especially because you can see how much her writing and mastery has grown throughout her books. She seems to have perfected the art of unexpected plot twists, and I absolutely loved how your perspective of characters completely changed throughout the book. She's a wonderful wonderful author, and I would recommend her writing to pretty much anyone. She has a way of making really really uncomfortable topics, somewhat bearable, and even if they make you feel super uncomfortable you read them anyway.

Seriously I'm in awe.

I found this book through one of the many bookish podcasts that I listen to and was really excited about it. Ava is brought back to her hometown after her crazy twin Zelda dies in a fire in the barn on their property. Then, she starts receiving letters from her, and maybe Zelda isn't actually dead. This book was originally promoted to me as a thriller, but I really don't think it is.

I found that this book explored family dynamics, and what it's like living in a broken home and having to be the caretaker of a parent more than I would expect in a thriller. I found the characters extremely well developed, and while I found myself wondering "Is Zelda dead or isn't she?" it didn't have the pacing of the thriller title. The book moved slowly, but not in a bad way. In a very immersive way, and a way that made me want to keep reading because I wanted to know more about these characters.

The only things I didn't really like in this book is only because I went in with the expectations of a thriller. I think a lot of my friends (and actually, my dad) would really enjoy this book, because yes, while Ava is trying to figure out whether or not Zelda is dead, she's dealing with her dad who has come back for the funeral and abandoned them, her mother who has dementia, her grandmother who is very over the top, her ex boyfriend, and more. I found it much more a deep dive into the characters, than a fast paced "What's happening next?" feeling that I expect in thrillers.

So over Labor Day weekend I decided to fly through a bunch of books, because why not? I had gotten a ton of recommendations from my local bookstore and this was one of them.

As I said in my original review, Have I just gotten really picky lately? I was yet again underwhelmed by this book, I saw the ending coming pretty early on. Sigh.

I was expecting this book to blow me away, I really thought that it was going to be a nail biter, that I wasn't going to anticipate the ending, but I saw it coming a mile away, especially once one of the siblings started to study genetics.

The ending was actually disappointing, how it all unraveled, and overall, it was absolutely more like 2.5 stars, but my only 2 star rated book is "Will Grayson, Will Grayson" and I didn't hate the characters in this book like I sort of did in that one? Anyway, it seemed super predictable to me as I've said before. Sorry not sorry?
