**DISCLAIMER**
I didn't read a physical copy of this book, I listened to the audio book. Tim Curry's magical narration accounts for a good chunk of my four star review. And by good chunk, I mean about half.
THE REHASH
This book is about young Sabriel who is the daughter of the Abhorsen. In this world, an Abhorsen is basically a necromancer that's in charge of the dead. They make sure spirits cross over okay, help those who are stuck, save the people who can be saved, and have the ability to travel into the afterlife. He's pretty much a low key bad ass. In the prologue, he saves Sabriel from death by traveling into the realm of the dead and snatching her from a monster determined to get revenge. Uh-oh. Fast forward 18 years and Sabriel is at a private school where magic isn't really the norm, making her easy powers stand out. Still, she's an excellent student that everyone loves and is even a Prefect. Every night she uses magic to talk to her father, something that freaks her teachers out, but they smartly ignore. One night, instead of getting a visit from her dad, a mysterious black figure appears carrying her father's bag that holds his sword and magical bells. Sabriel immediately knows something has happened to her father and sets out on an adventure to save him. Along the way she meets Mogget—the best friggin' talking cat since Sabrina the Teenage Witch—and eventually Touchstone who holds the key to finding her father and defeating all the zombie bad guys.

THE UGLY
Going into this book, I was so excited. The prompt made it sound like an amazing story, but man did I get bored during the first half. It confused me because all of the elements I normally loved were there. Sabriel is an independent woman with a good head on her shoulders, the magical world is amazingly built, there's tons of action, and Mogget is hilarious—enough to make me want to name my own pet after him.
However, I found myself losing focus during most of the beginning and needed to rewind the audio to make sure I really understood what was going on. If it hadn't been for Tim Curry's amazing cat impressions and repeatedly saying the word "knickerbockers," I don't think I would have made it through. And it definitely would have been put down and forgotten had I been actually reading it.
THE GOOD
Thankfully, Sabriel stumbled acrossa very naked, wooden Touchstone and managed to rekindle my interest. #SorryNotSorry
After that, the story really picks up and I LOVED it. I had to fight the urge to give it a five star rating because the ending is so great. There's tons of action, running, zombies, and awesome Sabriel who manages to be her own hero without a male savior. *Fist pumps*
FINAL WORD
If you're anything like me and some of the other reviewers I've seen on here, hang tight during the first half because the last chunk makes it a worthwhile read.
And for the love of god, please do yourself a favor a listen to the audio book.

The Laughing Listener
February 2020
Format: Audiobook
Narrator: Kate Simses
Length: 9 hours & 12 minutes
Story Rating: 3 Stars
Performance Rating: 2 Stars
Overall Rating: 3 Stars
Woooooow, okaaaaaay… What a ride that was. I’ve been sitting on this series for quite a while now because I had a feeling this wouldn’t exactly be my cup of tea, but I saw it the other day and thought “what the hell?” I needed some entertainment and decided to go for it. And uhhh entertainment is definitely what I got. Let’s just dive into this thing.
THE UGLY
First of all, I listened to the audiobook of this and ohhhhhh man. Not the move friends. Not the move. The narrator Kate Simses wasn’t the worst, and she’s actually a pretty good voice actress. But she sounds so young!! It threw me off in the beginning because she sounds more like a 10 year-old than the teenager Juliette is supposed to be. And THE SCRATCHING SOUNDS. LET’S TALK ABOUT THE GODDAMN SCRATCHING SOUNDS. I came so close to DNF-ing this because the scratching was so annoying and confusing. Seriously didn’t know what was going on for the first 25-ish% of this novel. I had to look up the actual text and SEE it to understand why the hell it was happening. But even then, it STILL made some of the dialogue hard to understand because sometimes I couldn’t tell what was ACTUALLY being said and what Juliette was just THINKING about saying. UGH. Okay, moving on…

There was BARELY any plot to this book ya’ll. This is categorized as a dystopian novel, but it’s basically a romance with some dystopia sprinkled in for flavor. I read this entire book and still BARELY understand what’s going on outside of Juliette’s relationship with Adam. How did civilization end and why has the world been turned upside down?? Who knows! But there’s a lot of talk about the “clouds changing color” and “birds not flying” which I guess is supposed to be the explanation???
Instead, this book was about Juliette meeting Adam, remembering Adam, thinking about Adam, hugging Adam, kissing Adam, making out with Adam, falling in love with Adam, Adam, Adam, Adam. The guy isn’t even interesting! Can we maybe take a two second break from ADAM to get some more plot or world building??
Also, can we please please please please PLEASE stop romanticizing guys who are actually stalkers??? PLEASE. I’m begging. Why is this a thing?????
THE GOOD
*Sighs aggressively* Despite the rough start and the ADAM-ness of this, I eventually kinda got hooked onto the story. I feel bad for Juliette and I understand why, after everything she’s been through, she would hold on to her newfound relationship with Adam so tightly. HE bugs the crap out of me because he’s so two-dimensional and boring, but I really did feel for Juliette. And her power is so cool! I’m curious to learn more about it and see how it really works.
I also really loved Warner. I know he’s a super mega creep, but he’s easily the most interesting character out of the bunch and it was kinda fun watching his evil ass go. Since I’ve waited so long to read these books, I already know who he ends up with and I’m suuuuuper curious to see how that ship sets sail.

My brain has put this series on the same level as The Selection books. Like, are they the greatest examples of fiction? Maybe not, but I’m sure as hell gonna have fun watching all the drama go down.

FINAL WORD
I meeeeeeean… *Shrugs* I can see the appeal, but I’m not really the target audience. Can’t say I loved this, but it was great entertainment and I definitely plan on continuing with the series just to see what happens.

A large chunk of this is just the last events of book two told from Adam's perspective, and since I already think he's trash, this was a struggle. Like, I kind of don't care?? It only got interesting at the very end when we find out what happened to Kenji and the others from Omega Point.
I get what Mafi is trying to do. She's trying to create more space between Adam and Juliette to make way for Warner, but it feels unnecessary??? Adam was already annoying AF anyway and they broke up like five times in the last book, so why even bother?
The only reason I gave this two stars is because I'm madly in love with Kenji and Jame is the actual cutest.

Damn, I forgot how much I love these books. There are so many friggin books in this universe, it’s sometimes hard to keep them all straight and I read this trilogy so long ago that I wanted to do a reread before I hit up the newly released [b:Chain of Gold|17699853|Chain of Gold (The Last Hours, #1)|Cassandra Clare|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1571379245l/17699853._SY75_.jpg|19212510]. I’m glad I did too! I forgot so much and there were a lot of little Easter eggs that I appreciated this second time.

But now that I’m rereading these books as an older adult, it seems so obvious. To this day I love The Mortal Instrument books, but it’s mostly out of a deep nostalgia. The characters and world building are great, but the story is very soap-opera-dramatic and over the top. I know this and love it anyway because it was the first fandom I was ever really a part of.

Now this series feels light years ahead of The Mortal Instruments. There’s a very stilted feeling in The Mortal Instrument books after [b:City of Glass|3777732|City of Glass (The Mortal Instruments, #3)|Cassandra Clare|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1369452339l/3777732._SY75_.jpg|3443248] where the series was supposed to end before awkwardly being drawn out over three more books. But The Infernal Devices feels so much more intentional. A lot of planning must have gone into this story and it’s so fun watching it all play out.
And the characters! Cassie has always been the queen of giving us awesome characters, but I especially love this group. Tessa, Sophie, and Charlotte are some of my favorite women in this universe (so far anyway) and the brotherly/bff vibes between Jem and Will can’t be beat.
I’ve seen several people over the years recommend starting with this series as an introduction to the Shadowhunter universe, which always made me nervous. Even though they’re first in the chronological timeline, I worried that the explanations and world building would be too brief to understand since they weren’t written first. Now that I’ve reread this book though, I’m realizing that was silly. These are a great introduction to this world if you’re looking to break into the shadowhunter universe! Personally, I think this series is far superior over The Mortal Instruments, so I think reading this first will give you the strength to get through that not-as-great series later on.
