Skillfully written interconnected short stories that display the serendipitous impact of a single book on the lives of 10 people, beginning and ending in an unexpected way with the author. The mood is bittersweet, with loss threading throughout, but the melancholy is tempered by hope and connection. A quintessential book club book.

That was a ride! I switched between reading and listening to this one. The audiobook is excellent and definitely captures the narrator's tone. I loved the narrator voice (both in the book and the audio), the cheeky metafictional deconstruction of mystery books, the setting and family dynamics, and the sheer bananas complicated and clever plot. The bit that could've gone better for me was the monologuing wrap-up/reveal. By that point, I was expecting something more deft than such a long spiel. It might not have lost me in print but I was listening to the audio at the time and felt like I wasn't quite getting all of it. Still — it was a fun read!

I do love a science fantasy! (Monk and Robot love forever!) And I probably had oversized hopes for this particular one. It ended up being an enjoyable read that was somewhat marred by bouts of oddly ribald humor and the weight of expectations.

The humor, which was admittedly funny in the author's Extraordinaries books (and, to a lesser degree, in some previous humorous fantasies and contemporaries) felt out of place here. Not all of the humor, of course — there's plenty of Klune's other trademark brands of humor, including a very needy and lovable sentient Roomba with ADHD and a kind-hearted and terrifying caretaker robot who issues threats of pain while displaying pithy remarks. Both hilarious.

As for the unmet expectations, that's mostly on me, but I'm also not sure the story manages to communicate the big truths at its core — the ones about humanity, time, forgiveness, loyalty, hope. It felt a little flat — the characters and plot needed to be rounded out, plumped up, given a few more emotional beats and a few less repetitive gags.

Still... any day reading a robot fantasy by T.J. Klune is a good day.

Angst isn't my thing, but if it's your thing, you can kindly ignore my relatively mediocre rating for an Emily Henry book. If you also enjoy a strong friend group, a summer-in-Maine vacation setting (complete with a lobster fest), good-humored bit-style banter, opposites attract, forced proximity, only one bed, altruistic idiots, mental health rep, realistic life challenges, the excavation of the effects of childhood family dynamics, grown up "gifted" kids, personal emotional growth, people learning how to communicate with each other, and a slow-burn bit of steam — assume you can add another full star to my rating and dive right in for a beautiful, emotional romance read. More suited to Henry fans who preferred People We Meet on Vacation rather than those who preferred Book Lovers. And if you like this one AND Henry's more bookish books, definitely check out The Roughest Draft by Emily Wibberley and Austin Siegemund-Broka

I was hoping for a little more from this — a broader, more creative brainstorming of how it might be applied in other lives and situations. It managed it feel a little pedestrian and privileged all at the same time? It delivers what it promises, however, and the further reading suggestions are a welcome addition. I may revisit it again when I'm in less of a gray mood. The general idea is appealing, so it may prove to be a good catalyst in the future.

I was super close to DNFing in the first 50 pages, and I'm still wondering if that might've been the better choice. It's competently written, and I understand why others might like it, but there's something off and off-putting about this one, and I'm sorry to say I'm not going to devote any more time to it to try to figure it out. It's an "irascible/antisocial/curmudgeonly elder and other floundering figures connect and create a supportive community" story, of a sort I've certainly read and appreciated before — A Man Called Ove, The Authenticity Project, The Reading List, All the Lonely People, Iona Iverson's Rules for Commuting, The Secret Life of Albert Entwistle. It's written in multiple points of view, which I also generally enjoy. The first section proved to be my least favorite POV, so I was hopeful that pushing through it would be worthwhile. It was... okay-ish. Interesting characters, whose back stories are basically the plot, and a moderately satisfying conclusion. I would've preferred fewer characters, more depth, more challenge to some of the casual cruelties and sexism, more humor, and a greater sense of sustainable growth and happiness at the end.

Re-read for book club and loved it just as much the second time. Retired lady pirate gets the crew back together for one last job — shenanigans and legends ensue.  Perfection. No notes.

My favorite by Abby Jimenez so far! Genuinely laugh-out-loud funny but anchored with realistic struggles, touching sincerity, and heartfelt pining. Oh, the pining!
