This was a really fun read. I'm not a big fan of reading about werewolves, but this book had me invested! I really enjoy the origin story of a character turning into a werewolf and having to figure out this new part of them. Both main protagonists are disabled and living with chronic illnesses. Tony has asthma and we see him using an inhaler during his track meets. Eli lives with an autoimmune disorder and we see him in the hospital a lot.
Eli is a trans boy who has gotten top surgery and I was pleasantly surprised bc I didn't know there was trans rep! It was so subtle and that's what I love to see when there's a trans character. There's also an Achellian romance that is a slow burn (which I love) and I enjoyed the way it was done. THE TENSION!
However, I do wish the book wasn't ALL in black and white. This threw me off and made me less interested and invested in the surroundings. I definitely think Blackwater would have benefited from having pops of color throughout the book when needed especially since the cover is so lively. I understand B&W for the purposes of a paranormal book, but I still stand by my opinion.

Despite the few HP references, I really enjoyed this story and audiobook. It's very haunting and had me gasping. Well done, can't wait to read more from this author! So glad I finally got around to reading this.

This was an incredible debut. I cried so many tears reading Iveliz's story. This is going to mean so much to so many kids and people who were/are like Iveliz. As someone who also experiences anxiety and depression and has since childhood, this story means so much to me.

This book contains discussions of racism, homophobia, past minor characters’ death, and alcoholism, as well as depictions of homophobic bullying, a scene involving brief sexual harassment/racial fetishism, and several HP references.
LOTS OF HP references but besides that, I loved this. I love Julian Winters and how he writes such unique stories that queer teens NEED. I loved having a nerdy, argle vest wearing Black gay adoptee teenage boy as our main character. It was so refreshing. The conversation of labels and feeling like you don't know yourself (esp as a teen in HS) was done so well. Loved it. However, there are lots of pop culture references throughout the book, if that is something that will bother you while reading. Read on audiobook & really liked the audio
