They say a lot of slurs in this one :(
Boring and obnoxious and tedious. Considered finishing it but then I saw a bunch of reviews from people DNFing at 50% and figured it wasn't worth the trouble. Sucks when a book with a great premise can't seem to get any of it right.

WHAT is the big deal? How has this book become so unbelievably popular? What is the appeal? I don't get it.

Masterpiece, obviously. I got into a fight over interpretation with some girls in my World Lit class whom I am certain have never felt utterly alien in their lives. I'll admit I skipped over some of the critical essays in my edition because you could not pay me to care about Freud's bearing on this book. Anyway, I need to read more Kafka.

Very readable and very impressive. I kind of devoured this book, to be honest. It reads like a true crime podcast, complete with cliffhangers and narrative interludes. I appreciated how frank Emerson is at the end regarding the nature of research and memory, and the distinction he draws between "knowing you've printed some factual errors and knowingly printing a factual error" (356). I've always been curious about Go Ask Alice as a piece of propaganda, though it was never part of my childhood, and I feel that this book fleshes out the story in a way that is both informative and interesting.
