Book Series: The Jumbies Book 3

Rating: 5/5

Publication Date: September 3, 2019

Diversity: Yes! Caribbean!

Recommended Age: 10+ (scary moments with a huge hurricane, might frighten those who aren’t used to them)

Genre: MG Fantasy

Publisher: Algonquin Young Readers

Synopsis: In book three of the popular Jumbies series, Corinne must use her emerging supernatural powers to battle the angry god who would destroy her Caribbean island home.

When an out-of-season hurricane sweeps through Corinne’s seaside village, Corinne knows it’s not a typical storm. At first Corinne believes Mama D’Leau—the powerful and cruel jumbie who rules the ocean—has caused the hurricane. Then a second, even more ferocious storm wrecks the island, sending villagers fleeing their houses for shelter in the mountains, and Corinne discovers the storms weren’t caused by a jumbie, but by the angry god Huracan.

Now Corinne, with the help of her friends and even some of her enemies, must race against time to find out what has angered Huracan and try to fix it before her island home is destroyed forever.

Review: For me not reading the other books in this series (totally my fault, bad time management) I thought this book was incredibly well written. The book flowed well, the characters were amazing, and I love the world building. This book was amazing and I want to go back and read the first two one day.

The only thing I will say is that this book was a bit hard for me to get into but that’s more than likely because I didn’t read the first two in the series.

Verdict: Definitely check this one out!

Synopsis: All’s quiet at 318 White Ash Lane—which is good. Billy could use some quiet. He’s got enough trouble paying off his bills, keeping his cat fed and healing the ribs he bruised in a wreck with a Honda.

But maybe this is just a bump in the road. Maybe all he needs is a few weeks to heal up before he gets his life back on track. Fate, though, has another plan for Billy. That plan’s name is Jenny, and she hits a lot harder than a Honda.

Review: I felt that for a short story this book did decent at presenting a substantial story. The writing was good and the plot was interesting.

However, the book is super short and you don’t get really developed characters in this book. Also, the book was extremely fast paced.

Verdict: If you like short romances, this is for you!

Book: A Blade So Black

Author: L. L. McKinley

Book Series: The Nightmare-Verse Book 1

Diversity: Own voice! African American main character FTW!

Rating: 4/5

Publication Date: September 25, 2018

Publisher: Square Fish

Pages: 384

Recommended Age: 15+ (violence, gore)

Synopsis: The first time the Nightmares came, it nearly cost Alice her life. Now she's trained to battle monstrous creatures in the dark dream realm known as Wonderland with magic weapons and hardcore fighting skills. Yet even warriors have a curfew.

Life in real-world Atlanta isn't always so simple, as Alice juggles an overprotective mom, a high-maintenance best friend, and a slipping GPA. Keeping the Nightmares at bay is turning into a full-time job. But when Alice's handsome and mysterious mentor is poisoned, she has to find the antidote by venturing deeper into Wonderland than she’s ever gone before. And she'll need to use everything she's learned in both worlds to keep from losing her head . . . literally.

Review: I thought this book was really well written and was a great twist on the original Alice tale. The voice and the characters were well done and the writing was spectacular.

The only down points to me were that the pacing was a bit slow for my tastes and I thought some of the action scenes were a bit chaotic and a little hard to follow, but that might have been me reading at close to midnight lol. I also know what the author has said on Twitter but for the purpose of this review I'm leaving it out. Her book was great and if you're an Alice lover you'll love this tale.

Verdict: A great retelling!

Book: A Dream So Dark

Author: L. L. McKinley

Book Series: The Nightmare-Verse Book 2

Diversity: Own voice main character and LGBT rep!

Rating: 4.5/5

Publication Date: September 25, 2019

Publisher: Square Fish

Pages: 416

Recommended Age:15+ (violence, gore)

Synopsis: Still reeling from her recent battle (and grounded until she graduates), Alice must abandon her friends to complete her mission: find The Heart and prevent the Red Lady's rise. But the deeper she ventures into Wonderland, the more topsy-turvy everything becomes. It’s not until she’s at her wits end that she realizes—Wonderland is trying to save her.

There’s a new player on the board; a poet capable of using Nightmares to not only influence the living but raise the dead. This Poet is looking to claim the Black Queen’s power—and Alice's budding abilities—as their own.

Dreams have never been so dark in Wonderland, and if there is any hope of defeating this mystery poet’s magic, Alice must confront the worst in herself, in the people she loves, and in the very nature of fear itself.

Review: For the most part I really liked this sequel. I thought it was well written and the characters are amazingly well developed. The world was very well built and the characters are well developed from the first book. We got a lot more of the characters, especially Alice and her mother, and we got LGBT rep! The author definitely evolved from the first book to this one and I'm excited to see what else she writes!

I still had some issues with pacing and the fight scenes (personal preference), but other than that it was a great read!

Verdict: I love this Alice.

Book: What I Want You to See

Author: Catherine Linka

Book Series: Standalone

Rating: 5/5

Publication Date: February 4, 2020

Publisher: Little Brown Books for Young Readers

Pages: 384

Recommended Age: 16+ (some sexual content, art stealing, some language)

Synopsis: Winning a scholarship to California’s most prestigious art school seems like a fairy tale ending to Sabine Reye’s awful senior year. After losing both her mother and her home, Sabine longs for a place where she belongs.

But the cutthroat world of visual arts is nothing like what Sabine had imagined. Colin Krell, the renowned faculty member whom she had hoped would mentor her, seems to take merciless delight in tearing down her best work—and warns her that she’ll lose the merit-based award if she doesn’t improve.

Desperate and humiliated, Sabine doesn’t know where to turn. Then she meets Adam, a grad student who understands better than anyone the pressures of art school. He even helps Sabine get insight on Krell by showing her the modern master’s work in progress, a portrait that’s sold for a million dollars sight unseen.

Sabine is enthralled by the portrait; within those swirling, colorful layers of paint is the key to winning her inscrutable teacher’s approval. Krell did advise her to improve her craft by copying a painting she connects with . . . but what would he think of Sabine secretly painting her own version of his masterpiece? And what should she do when she accidentally becomes party to a crime so well -plotted that no one knows about it but her?

Complex and utterly original, What I Want You to See is a gripping tale of deception, attraction, and moral ambiguity.

Review: I absolutely loved this book so much! The characters were well developed, the plot was intriguing from start to finish, and the story was equal parts sad as it was uplifting. It was also a very fast paced read! It was a great read!

My only issues are that the book jumped around a lot, it was a bit hard to follow in spots, and the book did not give you a truly happy ending, which I desperately wanted. Like it ended great, but it still had loose ends.

Verdict: Prepare your tissue box!

Book: The Unwilling

Author: Kelly Braffett

Book Series: Standalone

Rating: 1/5

Publication Date: February 11, 2020

Publisher: MIRA

Pages: 400? Felt longer.

Recommended Age: +18 (from what I got to: torture, mutilation, murder, drug references and use, TW child abuse, mental abuse, physical abuse, and cutting)

Synopsis:

Review: This book was a dnf for me. The book read almost like tortureporn and I just couldn't get into it for the life of me. I had to have eye bleach after this reading. And it's so circular. The book rambles on and on and never gets to the point. It's tragic, but it happens. If you're gonna read it, get snacks and a comfy sitting spot.

Verdict: Not for me.

Book: Black Wings Beating

Author: Alex London

Book Series: Skybound Book 1

Rating: 3.5/5

Publication Date: October 9, 2018

Publisher: Farrer, Straus, and Giroux

Pages: 432

Recommended Age: 15+ (some violence and slight gore)

Synopsis: The people of Uztar have long looked to the sky with hope and wonder. Nothing in their world is more revered than the birds of prey and no one more honored than the falconers who call them to their fists.

Brysen strives to be a great falconer--while his twin sister, Kylee, rejects her ancient gifts for the sport and wishes to be free of falconry. She's nearly made it out, too, but a war is rolling toward their home in the Six Villages, and no bird or falconer will be safe.

Together the twins must journey into the treacherous mountains to trap the Ghost Eagle, the greatest of the Uztari birds and a solitary killer. Brysen goes for the boy he loves and the glory he's long craved, and Kylee to atone for her past and to protect her brother's future. But both are hunted by those who seek one thing: power.

Review: Holy cow I thought this was a great book! The book was intriguing and it had me hooked from beginning to end. The characters were well developed as was the world building. And the writing was well done!

However, I did think that the book was info heavy. It was a bit of an info dump in places and that made for the pacing to be slower than what I would have liked.

Verdict: a great read!

Book: Red Skies Falling

Author: Alex London

Book Series: Skybound Book 2

Rating: 4/5

Publication Date: September 3, 2019

Publisher: Farrer, Straus, and Giroux

Pages: 432

Recommended Age: 15+ (violence, slight gore)

Synopsis: In this thrilling sequel to Black Wings Beating, twins Kylee and Brysen are separated by the expanse of Uztar, but are preparing for the same war – or so they think.

Kylee is ensconsed in the Sky Castle, training with Mem Uku to master the Hollow Tongue and the Ghost Eagle. But political intrigue abounds and court drama seems to seep through the castle's stones like blood from a broken feather. Meanwhile, Brysen is still in the Six Villages, preparing for an attack by the Kartami. The Villages have become Uztar's first line of defense, and refugees are flooding in from the plains. But their arrival lays bare the villagers darkest instincts. As Brysen navigates the growing turmoil, he must also grapple with a newfound gift, a burgeoning crush on a mysterious boy, and a shocking betrayal.

The two will meet again on the battlefield, fighting the same war from different sides―or so they think. The Ghost Eagle has its own plans.

Review: I thought this was a great sequel! The book picks up immediately where the first left off and the book forces the two main characters to develop seperately, which was well done! The writing was amazing and the book wasn't as heavy as a read as the first one since all the info dumping was done.

However, I did think some of the action scenes were a bit chaotic and a little hard to follow, but overall extremely well done!

Verdict: A great series!

Publication Date: June 19, 2019

Publisher: indie published

Pages: 318

Recommended Age: 16+ (violence, gore, some slightly adult scenes)

Synopsis: My name is Yuna Queenertia,

Magic. A thing of fiction. A thing of mystery. Abundant and thriving; fantasy became my reality. But the world of magic is not what it seems.
Minor flashbacks of my past begin to surface. Granny and those I know hold more secrets than they tell. A serial killer called the Phantom runs rampant within the village. Born with silver hair, I come to find I am a curse. And a target to the village I live in.
My personality begins to split as I am pushed to fighting for who I am. But who am I really? Am I Yuna Queenertia? Or the Cursed Queen?
My name is Yuna Queenertia, and this is my tale.

Review: I thought this was a well done book! It was intriguing, the plot kept me intrigued for the whole of the book, and the characters were well developed. I also loved the world the author managed to make up for this and they developed it well.

However, I do think that there were things in this book that were added and could have been used for the plot but weren't and leave the reader confused.

Verdict: A well done book! Worth the read!

Book: 10 Days Gone

Author: A. L. McKittridge

Book Series: Standalone

Rating: 3/5

Publication Date: February 18, 2020

Publisher: MIRA

Pages: 384

Recommended Age: 18+ (some language, violence, gore, murder)

Synopsis: They know exactly when he'll strike... They just have to find him first.

With pressure pushing in from all sides, a promising breakthrough leads the detectives to Tess Lyons, a woman whose past trauma has left her too damaged to appreciate the danger she's in. Unwilling to let another woman die, A.L. and Rena will put everything on the line to keep Tess safe and end the killer's deadly spree once and for all--before time runs out again.

Review: I thought this book was very fast paced and well written. The book was intriguing and the plot kept me hooked from beginning to end.

However, I did feel like the characters were a bit flat and I just wasn't drawn to any of them. It was probably just personal taste but I just couldn't get along with them. I also predicted the ending, but again I'm really good at that.

Verdict: it was a decent suspense novel!
