maybe its bc im mentally ill and relate to marianne in certain aspects (the part where she always questions if somebody actually loves her) but i did genuinely enjoy this book....it was written for the overthinkers and i think for normal people (haha) you would just think it was frustrating (looking at the 1 star reviews i think im right) and it was !!
i think i finally understand how someone on the outside can feel so frustrated at two people (or sometimes just one person) for how quickly and impulsively they can ruin something good for them by overthinking, but of course, being an overthinker myself, i understood connell and especially marianne's thought processes.
-1 star bc the ending was......i get the artistic choice behind it but i felt abandoned

really held off on reading this book and then ended up reading it in one sitting.......as frustrating the ending is, i find it so interesting that we, the readers, are filled w the same emotion the narrator has felt throughout the entire book. the feeling wanting to know more, of needing to know more. beyond the literal events in the book, there is something so haunting about the women in this book being stripped of their right, their knowledge, their life, their memories and how theyre able to continue to live and love despite it all. the writing was absolutely amazing. and something so haunting about believing you might literally be the last person on the earth.
cult classic...someone get mia goth (as laura) and ali aster on set NOW
"I think, if I am in the place where we were together, then we are together again."
god where do i even start??? a book about life, death, love, grief and then love again. a horrifiyingly accurate representation of how it feels to love and grieve women as a woman. one of the best pieces of sapphic media i have ever read and its not even outwardly expressed except for one specific paragraph that immediately made me sob. the things i would do to pick anne de marcken's mind. the kind of book you can only write after experiencing it and the kind of book you can only read and appreciate to its fullest after experiencing love in its purest form and grief in its most overwhelming form.
just absolutely amazing thank you anne de marcken.

such an interesting depiction of grief....one of those stories that could be fixed with polygamy
the kind of book you have to give all your attention to to really capture the beauty holy shit i loved every thing about this book!!!!!!!!! loved the sibling dynamic (also v realistic) and loved how prominent art is throughout the book
a gracious 2.5....i love her writing style and there were def some gems in this book but at other times it just felt like pages were being forced to fill....at one point i thought i was studying for the mcat
i dont have an issue w easy surface level stories but if its hyped up as or advertised as something that will change your view on life and love.....erm it falls short
i actually read this a while ago, i still think about it...not life changing or new but it was a good fun read
