All of these stories deal with family, friendship, and growing up queer and having to stay closeted or be open and put up with homophobia. The gay protagonists are all messy and very unlikeable in their own ways, but they're well-written. Only one story has a non-queer protagonist, and he's also unlikeable due to how he treats his family, particularly his brother, who is queer. Overall, I really like this collection despite some upsetting moments of animal cruelty and homophobia.

Silvie and her parents are participating in an Iron Age reenactment with a professor and three students. Her dad is a cringey racist and misogynist piece of shit who hits his wife and daughter. Silvie and her mom are too afraid to stand up to him because he is loud and obnoxious. It is very obvious that to her dad (forgot his name), the reenactment is really an attempt to live out his pathetic fantasy in which there are no immigrants and women are there merely to cook and clean, especially when he and the professor make a ghost wall out of rabbit and cow skulls to keep out their imaginary enemies. This entire book is clearly a huge middle finger to Brexit and I love it so much.

I really enjoy reading horror that focuses on the ocean, so of course I had to read this. The fact that it's published by Tenebrous Press also helped.

Isaiah is on his first voyage on the whaling ship called Merciful, which unfortunately does not live up to its name after a strange man is found alive inside the body of a whale. Things gradually get worse for the crew as the novel progresses, as there is not enough food, and a mysterious illness appears. There is also some romantic feelings between Isaiah and the man from the belly of the whale.

The anti-capitalism theme is very evident in this book, such as when some fish suddenly appear on the ship, which the crew are excited to eat. But the captain makes them dump the fish back into the sea because according to him, they didn't work at getting the fish onto the ship. Fuck you Coffin, you piece of shit captain. 🖕🖕🖕🖕

Anyway, I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical horror. :)

The stories in this collection are more creepy and chilling than scary. Junji Ito's illustrations made reading them even more fun. Here are some that stood out to me:

Face - A woman has a tumor that looks like a face

Library - A weird little girl runs into the library and then disappears

Snow Day - A young woman encounters a strange woman walking barefoot when it's a cold and snowy day.

Summer Graduation Trip - A bonus short story that appears in the back of the book in manga format. It's about two friends who go on a trip to celebrate graduating, and have a strange experience when they enter the bath at the hotel they're staying at.

I'm glad I checked out this book and I will definitely reread it in the future :)
