There are many things that I have never—or, at least, have not yet—experienced. Which is why I decided to ask other people what they've learned in life. I talked to elementary school kids and ninety-year-olds; men and women who are much respected in our society as well as those who have lost their status. I sat with the former director-general of an East German company (Kombinat) in his garden in a village not for away from the high-rise buildings of Marzahn, a neighborhood in Berlin, and with a Syrian refugee family on the concrete floor of their basement apartment in Istanbul. The question I asked all these people was always the same: What have you learned in life?

I'm not especially proud of the impression I make in this journal. I cringe at my twee turns of phrase and my casual mentions of Hemingway and Soviet art films. But I've made a point not to edit it much. I love this twenty-five-year-old me, and I'm not mad at her for trying too hard. I'm a carefully stoic diarist, but beneath all the flatness and comic tedium runs a true current of sorrow and longing. This is the diary of a young artist with no money and few prospects. She's just moved into yet another shabby warehouse, and she's in love with her best friend, who appears to be in love with everyone but her. From the ouside, things look dismal, but her life is brimming with possibility. Sometimes she even knows it.
