I love this style of nonfiction, almost a scrapbook of art, literature, history, culture, and personal experience, together composing a collage which depicts a world where food is more than just sustenance (that said, elements of the text & design date this as an artifact of the mid-90s; I would love to read an updated anniversary edition).

I found the anachronistic turns of phrase and anthropological/scientific knowledge to be extremely distracting, but keep in mind, I'm the most annoying and least fun person you know.
(clarifying note: I don't mind historical inaccuracy, but "modern when it's convenient for the characters and medieval when it's convenient for the story" doesn't work for me)

The order in which this information was relayed baffled me. And I'm not talking about "the narrative failed to build suspense effectively," I'm talking about "this person's role in the story happened in chapter 4, but their background and physical description were only brought up in chapter 10"
