I can understand both the good and bad reviews of this book... It was an interesting read. Lots of witty banter, and action! But also some expectations weren't met.

On the upside, Lira's struggle against the will of her mother, and her journey to finding herself wonderfully helps to solidify the theme of Humanity (the theme being what will stick with me the longest). Plus the world was well developed and extremely interesting. And the ending was satisfying—which is hard to come by sometimes.

On the downside, I had a hard time connecting with the characters at first. Lira seemed to lack depth in the beginning (ironic), but as the story continued, her internal struggle won me over. I suppose it's hard to have character when you're not allowed to think for yourself...
I also *somehow* (*facepalm*) didn't realize it was a retelling of the Little Mermaid when I started. If it weren't for making that connection, it would have taken awhile to pick up on the romance brewing. It wasn't 'til near the end when the romance felt real. Before, and maybe a bit afterward too, it just seemed forced.

All in all, I left the story feeling a little jipped—I expected a slowburn romance and maybe a little more depth to the overall story.
Nevertheless, the action, theme, and character development, among other things, were great. Despite my complaints, I really enjoyed the story. I definitely recommend it to anyone who likes pirates and witty banter.
