I'm not sure this deserves the stars I'm giving it.
It was a book full of stupid people doing stupid people things, which.. granted might be realistic but it had me almost screaming at the book to NOT DO THAT!
But, I was in a zombie mood, and I was in the right mindset to get terrified and this did the job. But I don't know if that's because of the book or because I've had two nightmares in a row involving zombies.
My biggest complaint is the ending really, where

Spoiler
the little brother kills himself. I didn't think this was very well foreshadowed. He showed no signs of mentally deteriorating to the point where it.. just doesn't make a lot of sense
Oh what can I say about this?
The Prodigal Son is an excellent first installment by Stuart Johnson that has you begging for more. This is an indie author to keep watch for in the future!
I'm not sure I agree with how Matt handled the voice in his head, I surely would have attempted more negotiations, more meeting in the middle to make my life more agreeable. But his reaction was natural of a young boy turning teenager. As an adult it's easy to scoff at such emotions but it made the character more realistic and likeable.
I'm sad to hear it's only going to be a trilogy, but I'm looking forward to (hopefully) see Matt mature and grow up a little.
The book made me gasp, sit up straight and go "no way!".
I love any book that makes me have a physical reaction to them. It means they're really good!
Other than that, I love the universe. The paladins and the Blackguard, it's a solid foundation a lot of stories can be built upon. I love that it isn't heaven versus hell, black versus white, that there are greys in there that make people uncomfortable about their position.
I'd also like to point out that for a Kindle Unlimited book this book was well edited and read like quality works. It's probably one of the best KU books I've rented, and I'm up on 100+ titles this year!
