This is one of those books that will stick with you for a lifetime. I would no doubt put this in my top ten favs of all time. I don't care who you are, this is a must-read kind of book to me. It shines a light on our current state in an extremely scary way.
When Jesus Was a Green-Eyed Brunette: Loving People Like God Does by Max Davis
5.0
As best-selling author Max Davis puts it, “Jesus is very much alive today and still does incredible things—sometimes supernatural things—through us!” Those hurting and weary from worn-out religion are longing for a fresh touch from the living Jesus. Davis challenges us to do more than simply receive God’s grace—we need to allow grace to soften, change, and shape us. As you read this book, you will laugh, cry, and come face-to-face with the living Jesus, much like Davis did, meeting him living in a green-eyed brunette.
I'll be honest, I was a little wary of this book because of the title, but once you read it, you get it. This isn't a "whimsy" book. Max Davis has no qualms about talking about some pretty serious issues. Legalism and a common outlook on Christianity fill the pages. It will definitely shed light on how non-believers can view us Christians (Ahem, we need to work on that.) This book also highlights false beliefs that we have tacked on to the Word over the years (Yeah, we REALLY gotta stop doing that.). He himself is an example of the damage that false theologies can do to a person. It's VERY eye opening.
The best thing this book has to offer? Beautiful, real stories that people from all different walks of life have experienced. These stories of miraculous hope are AMAZING! They WILL give you goosebumps! I was completely in awe over many stories, including Donna's (you HAVE to read this book, especially for her story!)
If you're a little tired of the watered down gospel that's being spread around these days, take a look at this book. No doubt, this books has proof that the Lord is still doing amazing things. We CAN be a part of this too! We just have to make that decision and allow Christ to use us to affect the lives of others in a positive way!
Oh, and you'll definitely find out who that "green-eyed brunette" is!

A Madness So Discreet by Mindy McGinnis

"Yours is a story whose events happen more often than are told. Tales like these belong to the black, do they not? Where they can't be seen or heard. But I can smell it out quick like the devil."
I've been thinking about this review ever since I finished this book. The hangover effects from this are pretty long lasting. I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this, but man-this was an amazing read.
There was a point where the entire story began to shift and I was pissed. I thought it was turning into a genre I typically don't like to read-but I pressed on and was pleasantly surprised. Mindy has an amazing way with words, and she can completely flip you around in the story and leave you with your mouth wide open.
I'll be honest, some parts of this had me in tears. It touched a little too close to home and I think that's why it was hard for me to review this, yet this is one of my favorite reads from this year. Although the story was a bit painful, the characters were absolutely amazing! Mindy MADE you feel what they were feeling, and there were a few that I just fell in love with. There's a major twist that I didn't see coming and felt like my heart had been ripped in two.
Just read it, dang it. It's dark but there's so much truth and hope within these pages. It's just a beautiful story, unlike anything I've read in a long time.

Sometimes, looking at an event through the eyes of someone else gives a new perspective on the story as a whole. You can get an entirely different outlook than previously, and your storyteller may have something to offer that you hadn't experienced before.
Return to the story of Jesus and read it from a new perspective in Keith Korman's Eden: The Animals' Parable. In this beautifully inspired retelling of the Gospels, we see Jesus and his disciples in the Holy Land through the eyes of the animals especially his intrepid and loyal dog, Eden. Simple, clear, and spiritually profound, Eden is for readers of all ages, this artful retelling is captivating, moving, and alive with the joy you felt the first time you opened the Bible.
This is a beautifully written story for the entire family! What a great way to bring up deeper conversations with your children, while giving them something to relate it to. What child doesn't want to hear a story told by a bunch of animals? There are even a few illustrations scattered throughout. For me, it felt like experiencing the Gospels for the first time again. It made me emotional and gripped my heart. It also reminded me of one of our family's favorite movies, At Jesus' Side, which is an animated movie told from the viewpoint of a dog and his friends.
Eden also reminds me of a beautiful folktale. It helps to explain things a little easier and it just overall paints a beautiful picture of our Lord and His time on the earth. There is so much symbolism in this novel, it's an English major's dream!!!
