Loving this series. I'm glad this book, set in Philadelphia, shows the range of racist behaviors and beliefs that characterized the North during the Civil War.

This book had some good insights sprinkled here and there, but the overall tone was somewhat narcissistic and a little condescending at times. Kottler struck me as burned out in many places and definitely egotistical. It made for a hard read, even in audio form. I had to keep taking breaks. But the good gems here and there were worth it.

I really loved the discussion about factory working children in this book. It was frank and honest in ways that kids can understand both intellectually and emotionally.

Really phenomenal look at anxiety. It is a surprisingly light read, funny and poignant and powerful all at once. I was pleasantly impressed with the depth of this book and its ability to remain an easy read.

Fantastic. I loved the conversational style and the honesty of this book. Especially, I loved the insights I gleaned and I can tell I'll be rereading this many, many times.
