Was nice to jump back in to the Chicago of Harry Dresden. Still moments when I wanted to shake him, but I figure if a character gets me that invested, it’s a well told story. Can’t wait to start Battle Ground.

The premise of the book drew me in, and the writing kept me interested. To see how the characters interacted and reacted to each other meant that I didn’t want to put the book down; should not have taken me 10 days to read but life happens. Will recommend this book to everyone I know!

This book held a few surprises; some were revealed and some are still hidden. The idea behind the story is what grabbed my attention and the way the characters were written made me want to read the second one immediately, especially with the closing line of the book.

In spite of the fact that this book was written in the 1930s, it is somewhat timeless. A locked room, rather a locked island and ten people with secrets gives us a true classic; an epilogue is added to solve the mystery, just in case you don’t figure it out yourself (which I didn’t.) Could have used fewer exclamation points but otherwise it stands up well.

Did not really enjoy this book at all. The main character, Eleanor, was not very believable. The blurb on the back of the book was deceiving and lead me to expect more than I got. The ending was good, but it didn’t make up for the rest of it.

I really enjoyed meeting Al, Nadia and Buck. Hearne knows how to make his characters three dimensional and people you might actually like to hang out with. Bringing in aspects of his Iron Druid series, he creates a whole new world of “magic”. Can’t wait for the next one.
