A Place for Us

Watching paint dry isn't as dull as this was.

Once upon a time, I would have made myself trudge through and finish this book. However, after listening to 28% of this book on audio, I won't subject myself to that.

The constant sudden timeline jumping alone is a huge reason why this isn't successful for me. It was jarring and it took me awhile on audio to realize there were sudden time jumps. Speaking of the audio, the audiobook was so slow and it was 17 hours long, I had to listen at 2.5x speed just to make it bearable.

This was a day to day happenings of an Indian Muslim family living in America, but there was no depth to anyone. Then, the minute there would be possible character building to make me care about the characters, the timeline would jump. Plus, there were so many minor characters that added NOTHING.

This needed editing. This probably could've been shorter and maybe cleaning up the timeline jumps to make them obvious would've helped me a little bit.

I suppose slow, family sagas aren't always up my alley, but sometimes they do work for me. However, this was a miss for me and I'm honestly wondering if I was reading the same book all of the five star reviewers read.

Thank you St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for a galley of this recent release.

Sometimes the pacing in a book can make or a break a book for me and sadly it broke this one for me. The pacing was so different between the POVs that I found it difficult to settle in and enjoy the book.

Additionally, at only 100 pages in, there were already some repetitive things including Natalie's insomnia and that Michael has a secret. I don't know about other readers, but I don't need reminded of those things constantly.

I also agree with some reviews from those that finished that at only 100 pages in that this was going to be too long of a book.

DNF. I listened to two hours of southern, rich woman drama and I’m not going to punish myself anymore.

Anyone feel free to spoil it for me 😂

I read about 115 pages in one and then randomly lost interest while reading. Haven’t had any interest since. Tried to read on today, and I can just tell that this one isn’t for me.

I’m not a huge fan of thrillers centered around toxic relationships and that’s what this one seems to be. Let me know if I’m wrong.

So bored. Interested concept but I need more to draw me in than an almost 50 year old basically having a mid life crisis with the attitude of a teenager.

I’m bored and I feel like actions are becoming repetitive. Some actions don’t seem to add anything

No connected plot, just vibes

The best way I can describe this is that it’s like a chaotic car crash that you’re driving past and can’t stop looking at because you hope it will get better

It doesn’t

I got to the halfway point for a book club discussion, but I have zero ambition to pick this back up to continue on

I’m tired of waiting for the plot to connect and tired of having no sense of what is happening when

The lack of character and plot development leading into an Insta attraction so early on is just not something I can like. Plus knowing what Kenna has planned to do regarding her daughter instead of going the legal route doesn’t sit well with me.

Also…stealing memorials? Yeah let’s not get into that

DNF -

1. It took me 5 days to get to page 37. I tried physical copy and audio - even Julia Whelan couldn’t save this one for me.

2. if there’s anything I hate in any kind of genre, it’s cluelessness and a surprise you’re expecting!!

3. Also, I hated Grapes of Wrath in high school so why did I think I’d enjoy

This is the second Kristin Hannah book I’ve DNFd, but I’ll keep picking up her other books

I was so excited to read a serendipitous romance, but I was so disappointed.

I found the plot very merandering, clunky and confusing. The romance was obviously a slow burn but with zero witty banter, chemistry, or development to keep my interest.

There’s also only so much I can take of a main character mentioning their ex constantly.

It was so hard to read a book where the main character not only has a selfish sibling that won’t help out with their sick mother, but is also a doormat to basically everyone.
