Sadly The New Neighbor did not work for me. I could tell by just reading the first few pages on the digital copy that this writing style may not be up my alley so I decided to wait for the audiobook from my library. The audiobook has not increased my enjoyment one bit. 

Somehow this seems both overwritten and lacking detail as the same details have been repeated in just the first few chapters. Also, this unreliable narrator is already grinding my gears. Perhaps women going through a midlife crisis (divorce, last kid off to college, job change, house selling) while being obsessed with a case and the new owners of her house is not for me as I just kept wanting to say, 'get over yourself'. 

Even the small amount of CIA aspects introduced within the first few chapters are not enough to keep me going. 

I hope this works for you, but it didn't work for me.

Sorry Taylor Jenkins Reid, you lost this one 0-6 0-6.

Tennis players have more personality than what you have Carrie. Tennis players are more than just an ego. 

Not to mention how eerily close this seems to mirror the lives of Serena and Venus Williams as well as many other female tennis players who were coached by their fathers. 

Just because you read some memoirs by tennis players doesn’t mean you can accurately write it - at least get the basic points of a game correct. I didn’t even get to their parts, but Mary Carillo and Patrick McEnroe should be embarrassed to be apart of this audiobook project.

I’ll leave the other issues with Carrie’s character to own voices reviewers because there are plenty of issues there.

What a bummer because I was so excited for this one. 

I kept waiting for the kids and young adult child to not being annoying brats, but of course they got worse. 

Nothing really happened besides whining and a missing wallet in the 89 pages I read.

I was very much enjoying this, but it just couldn't hold my attention. As someone who looked up to RBG and the work she did with the ACLU and on the Supreme Court, I was so excited to read this one. Sadly, it just didn't work out for me and wasn't quite what I was expecting. 

If you admire (and miss) RBG, I suggest at least trying this one!

It’s like a clogged kitchen sink of pretentious writing, robotic dialogue, unlikeable characters, and all of the trigger warnings. 

A character driven story with zero plot and zero character development. I agree with others that you will probably like this if you like Sally Rooney’s writing.

Also, the friendship is so toxic - stop glorifying it.

Make sure to check ALL of the triggers before going into this one.

Thanks Celadon and NetGalley for an ARC. Too many characters to keep track of, the chapters are too long, and the sudden POV change just didn’t work for for me.

It had the great gothic vibes surrounding Savannah, but the cast of characters and POV switches took away from the atmosphere. 

I need plot

I was really looking forward to this one: a mixed race couple who both address that they both experience mental health issues meet and bond at a bingo hall.

So going from there, the mental health rep was great including the importance of finding a therapist that works for you. 

The use of the bingo hall was fun, I really enjoyed that, but there were a few details there that seemed off. Including there being no winners with three numbers left? Improbable

Why I’m DNFing:
1. Apparently food themed sexual innuendos make me gag. I don’t know if I ever want to eat peach cobbler again 

2. Aja almost doesn’t brush her teeth because she likes the taste of him? GIRL. MISS. WHAT? Do people actually do this??

3. Due to reading this after publication date, I got the audiobook from the library for a tandem read. I personally don’t like how the narrator does Walker. The tone and cadence didn’t seem to match the character. 


While I think this one has qualities a lot of people will like, it just isn’t for me.

8% equates to two chapters, both of which felt like I was reading a textbook. I even tried the audiobook because hello, Julia Whelan can usually save anything, but it just wasn’t working for me. 

After everyone raved about The Plot, I was so excited to try this one out. Sadly, the first two chapters felt like an info dump on characters that seem quite dull. Maybe it’s just the mood I’m in with being very stressed, but it’s already been hard for me to want to get to 8%, so I’ll put myself first here and DNF. 

I’ve also seen this compared to The Goldfinch and I’d like a formal apology on that. 

This is a mess and it’s truly over the place. The opening chapter/prologue and the next chapter didn’t even match writing style. 

Beyond that, each POV has been insufferable so far and I’d rather gauge my eyes out than read a POV of an anti-vaxx celebrity. I’ve had enough Jenny McCarthy thank you very much.
