Hmm this is tough to review. I love the concept and the worldbuilding. At times I had to put it down because the idea horrified me so much (as an insomniac myself, the idea of losing sleep completely terrifies me). 

It's a decent mystery story, but I kept finding myself more interested in the worldbuilding and the Sleeplessness issues rather than the direct plot.

I think the ending was exactly as it should be (going for realism lol). It's a good book, but I think I craved a character that felt more like a person and a conflict that was less politically heavy.

This is a tough one. The first several chapters I found incredibly useful. And I'm glad I read it overall, but I had some issues with it.

Since it's older, it's obviously a bit outdated and not the most inclusive (the pronouns Jesus just use they/them for everything).

And while I get that it's meant to be a beginner's coverage of a lot of topics, I found that it so often focused on one type of BDSM. The later chapters seems to only focus on that or are so general/repetitive that I'm gaining nothing from them.

I don't know. I'm conflicted as some aspects of the beginning we're really helpful to me as more of a newcomer, but the rest felt a bit like being talked down to if that makes sense. 

Collection of folklore from the past. I actually got a really good story idea from this. 

"if I could wake up in a different place, at a different time, could I wake up as a different person?"

AH!! This is the wizard school book I've always wanted. The magic system and school world building are so wonderfully evil.

I love a protagonist that's so unlikeable that they somehow round about to bring very likeable, and the relationships feel earned. I can't stop thinking about the magic system honestly. UGH I love this book I can't wait to read the rest of the series

I love the world building. Would love more of it if it expanded into a full length novel in the future

Perhaps I should have started with Fight Club

This book goes crazy and stupid. I appreciate a rewrite of old supernatural creatures. I also love a bayou tale told with that heavy, feverish, evangelicalesque prose. Sometimes it's a bit TOO thick in my opinion and could have been edited down a bit. 

There was a bit too much talk about character's breasts for my liking (in a way that didn't feel warranted (I'm not a puriteen lol but it's a bit much sometimes). And one villain continually being described as FAT as such a negative trait as well. 

Besides this, I really enjoyed the book

I always say that I don't want books I relate to; I want books that will resonate with me. This is one of those.

I love you Silvia but I'm just not that into noirs...and this just didn't hit for me :(
