Four stars because this is a beautifully written book but not five because the parts where Monique was involved and Evelyn’s ultimate fate was predictable.
But that by no means take away from how great this book was. The character study of what a woman would do to rise from the bottom all the way to the top was excellent. Evelyn is such a complex character that throughout the almost 400 pages you can’t decide if you admire her or hate her. Not many books get me so emotionally invested that I feel everything the character is feeling and crying right along with them through the heartbreak. This is a book that I will be thinking about for a long time and I can’t wait to reread it.

I can’t pinpoint why, but I just don’t like Hendrix writing. Maybe it doesn’t need an exact reason and I am just not a fan. I was excited when in the description it said 90’s Metal band and expected to see more of the bands rise to fame and then inevitable fall. What I did not expect is that it took place strictly in the present and they are all washed up wishing for their glory days to return and getting small paragraphs of Kris reminiscing of the past. It would have been interesting to see a dual story line; the past being told with the present of the band rising from the bottom all the way through to fame and then selling their souls and the inevitable consequences that would have followed. Not the main character whining because she has a crappy job and a gap in her memory of the night they all signed the contracts and then got screwed over by the lead singer. It makes me sad to see the potential this story had and to see what it ended up being.

I was not expecting this book to end so differently than the movie; after all, it is a movie novelization. But once again the question is asked how many edits did the script go through after it was already given to the author? I definitely prefer this ending over the movies now, and I really hope the teeny tiny little cliff hanger is addressed in the continuing books and graphic novels!

A lot of information, names, and planets were given in a 138 page book that tied up the end of a three book arcing story. It was a good ending, if rushed; taking up only about two chapters to confront the bad guys and take them into custody. There was only Ona Nobis’ fate not revealed after she fell from the roof, and because nothing was said I can only assume that she is still out in the galaxy somehow due to the fact she can mold her body any way she needs it to. All in all it was good. I’m glad the story arc is over so we can move on to new plots, though I am curious to see where Nobis may show up next.
