TL;DR This book was too damn long lol. There were way too many repetitive action sequences. This is an example of the dreaded SFF bloat, 700 pages could have been 400-500 easily. The ending was a non ending which was extremely frustrating as I at least wanted some form of pay off after all the perambulating, but no just the end meh.

Despite the above critism I do not regret reading this isn't a situation where I want my time back. This was just disappointing because I love Space Horror and certain aspects of the setting were intriguing(the descriptions of the crazy AI were elite)

The characters were fine... some fit certain genre tropes/clichés than others. My Favourite character was Rapscallion. I love me some snarky AI/Robots that unnerve the humans, even if they are a sci-fi stable. But all in all they were enjoyable. I rooted for our little crew from the beginning.

The writing was brisk I surprised myself that I was able to finish a 700 page beast in a relatively short amount of time, when I'm the sort of person who takes months to finish books half this length. So kudos to the author for his fast paced writing style. Unfortunately this lead to a book where not a lot actually happened.

That being said personally,it was on the lower end of the "Just Okay" scale. I'm not sure I'll be picking up the rest of the series when, maybe if later instalments can be guaranteed to not be as bloated
Recommended for people who are; interested in space horror, aren't bothered by gore/violence, enjoy tropey character archetypes, enjoy cosmic horror, don't mind books being longer than they should be and aren't bothered by abrupt endings.

The Magic Order, Vol. 4

Mark Millar

DID NOT FINISH: 75%

DNF at issue 3 or 4

One Goddamn star and only because the artist's work is phenomenal.

Truly miserable hack garbage. Wasted potential wasted artists. Terrible story awful characters shit ass dialogue. Every body talks like a 15 year old boy who just learned what swear words are even the magical creatures from parallel dimensions. Also the R slur was so fvking unnecessary like my God Miller you are a grown ass man leave that shit to 4chan poisoned 18 year olds.

Truly a series that just gets worse with every instalment. The twists and reveals make no sense or actively contradict what little established character/lore we had. Every character is a murderous scumbag even the 9 year old girl who gets brutally ripped apart on screen. Why should the audience care about these miserable flesh sacks???
Everybody dies so unceremoniously and in contrived ways. No loyalty nothing holding these people together.

I held out because I loved the artists but I'm genuinely shocked how MM manages to bamboozle great artists to pen his underbaked edgelord trash.

This isn't deep or grimdark and as someone who loves darker toned stories this is just juvenile rubbish. This is what my secondary school self thought was the height of "dark" writing. Honestly I give GRRM a lot of crap because I think he does Too Much ® but never again because at least GRRM can actually write and construct a dark story worth a damn.

This is the first time in years I truly hate a book and wish I could have my time back.

This is a further reminder why I don't touch any Mark Miller excrement masquerading as "writing" with a ten thousand meter stick.

Had to DNF once i got to the Cousin Fvcking bits. Carmotta is like Cersi in more ways than one. A shame because I really enjoyed what i was reading,  but Incest especially graphic and on page is a big ick for me

That said the prose and characters were prett  darn good.
