Thank You to Netgalley for providing me with an E-ARC

A very strong sci-fi debut, the prose and overall writing was tight. Despite being an ARC I didn’t notice any typographical errors. The characters were all interesting amd compelling in their own ways. But it seems I’m a black sheep in reviews as i HATED Esek, i get that she’s meant to be awful but gyatt dam she was grating. Lol and i was kicking my feet when Esek starts having a Bad Time.

I will say that the characters being ultra talented Badasses as teenagers was giving a bit YA lol. Like no a 16 year old is not going to be a galactic level mastermind. But other than that it was great!

Another aspect I appreciated was how religion and religious people were treated. It was good to see Chono not be denigrated by the narrative for her beliefs. While still being realistic that there are people and institutions who cynically use the veneer of religion to justify their actions or hold onto power.

Had to DNF once I got to the Cousin Fvcking bits ☠,when people said Carmotta was like Cersi from ASOIAF they mean really like Cersi lol
. A shame because the parts I got to read were so

TL;DR This book was too damn long lol. There were way too many repetitive action sequences. This is an example of the dreaded SFF bloat, 700 pages could have been 400-500 easily. The ending was a non ending which was extremely frustrating as I at least wanted some form of pay off after all the perambulating, but no just the end meh.

Despite the above critism I do not regret reading this isn't a situation where I want my time back. This was just disappointing because I love Space Horror and certain aspects of the setting were intriguing(the descriptions of the crazy AI were elite)

The characters were fine... some fit certain genre tropes/clichés than others. My Favourite character was Rapscallion. I love me some snarky AI/Robots that unnerve the humans, even if they are a sci-fi stable. But all in all they were enjoyable. I rooted for our little crew from the beginning.

The writing was brisk I surprised myself that I was able to finish a 700 page beast in a relatively short amount of time, when I'm the sort of person who takes months to finish books half this length. So kudos to the author for his fast paced writing style. Unfortunately this lead to a book where not a lot actually happened.

That being said personally,it was on the lower end of the "Just Okay" scale. I'm not sure I'll be picking up the rest of the series when, maybe if later instalments can be guaranteed to not be as bloated
