It was an interesting concept but ended up being a lot more incestious than I had anticipated. I could have done with less footnotes and the weird center text formatting, though I understood the author was trying to convey the parchment format. For a novel that's supposed to be hallucinatory, everything seemed to be awfully logical. That being said, the story concept is fascinating, the descriptions are beautiful and the writing is great!

It's like a shot of Jameson, bitter but ends with a sweet aftertaste. Very gritty writing, but Cork is a gritty city and this story is a no-nonsense look at its underworld and the people associated with it. Kind of told in a schizoid fashion which made it somewhat hard to follow, but overall entertaining!

Very easy to read, but can go on tangents

It did not live up to her usual writing standards, very dry and hard to get through.

An amazing debut, if a little too ambitious at times. I really enjoyed the plotline, characters and Bennett's lyrical writing style. My only complaint would be that I wanted more of "The Mothers" perspective and voice because it was so powerful and unique.

I think I expected more from this novel, because it started off so strongly. It's like a mishmash of different dystopian novels, especially McCarthy's The Road. However, it was a little hard to follow between the ever-rotating cast of characters, especially towards the end, and I just got very confused.

Pretty funny, though at the end felt like the author was scrambling and throwing in characters like the Deputy Inspector, etc.
