The roots just keep getting more and more tangled. I'm starting to understand Monica more and hate Jedidiah too. Not sure where the story will go from here.

Lord I am hooked on this series! The revenge, the multiple plot lines coalescing, the surprise family members who turn out to be evil warlocks, what more could you want? I want Ipo to have her own collection - she is fascinating.

I was totally absorbed in the world of this book, a mismatch of Queens, NY, Hawaii, and 1980s Hong Kong - the way the author layers so much together - the family dynamics, the mythology, the theme of revenge and retribution. I just longed for more!

Highly suspenseful and wild - loved the twists and turns in this thriller, my heart is still racing, but ultimately feel so sad for Crystal! and gosh what a cliffhanger of an ending!

What a sweet touching book that explains the complexities Muslim kids face in majority white communities. 
Two points where the story became unbelievable to me:
1) I do wonder what it would be like if Zara and Zeesh lived in a more diverse neighborhood and if the racist experiences they've faced are quite that direct? Only curious because in my own personal experience, it's the insidious experiences that hurt more. 
2) And the parents really let the kids roam everywhere on the resort??? Muslim parents??? Really???

I enjoyed a lot about this graphic memoir - the pacing, the gentleness with which Navied treats his neighbors even though they are clearly racist, the gorgeous art form. The Country wrestles with questions many of us forgieners grapple with like the casual balance of kindness and violence in our neighbors, the "bless your heart", and the way they will bring you extra sugar and vote for policies that obliterate your existence. Felt the themes in this book heavy.

 Thank you Allah for creating Huda and this beautiful comic book series. I hope all the young women who need to see this work, do (and a few adult teachers too!). It's just great storytelling. 

 

In the near future, Sammie has to confront demons both literal (think mysterious sea creature gobbling up friends) and personal (think said friends who don't understand your gender and sexual identity). Lubchansky has a great control of plot and timing, never letting us linger too long into the logistics of El Campo or the mysterious Grey Hand, but I wish we got to spend more time with Sammie and Adam, or maybe even know about their backstory. The resolution felt a bit unbelievable because there's so few interactions between them. Adam served as Sammie's best man? How did that go??
