A gory moving account of the 1971 Attica Prison Uprising. Note: chap 1-5 are not for the faint of heart. This is very graphic and detailed. For all that, it is necessary in a police and carcarel system that tries to sanitize its violence.

A very thoughtful exploration of Ruiz vs Texas where the entire state of Texas was found to be in violation of human rights & a reminder of its somber aftermath.

I was blown away by K Ming Chang's Bestiary. Now in Gods of Want, Chang expands on the same themes, revisiting the family, friends and strangers. These stories walk between the grotesque and the beautiful, finding hope in grief, and voice in the senseless. Each story surprises and delights, shaking what is possible with the written word. I can't wait for everyone else to read this collection!

Safia Elhillo speaks the language of my soul, of the girl who lived in a hot country with noisy streets and rooftop gardens. Her work is effervescent, floating on the cusp of girlhood and womanhood, dancing delicately between the two. I loved every single poem, for every girl who refuses to die no matter what the world throws at her.

I think it's slow moving but Larsen does some incredible work with little recurring details like Helga Crane's clothing. Captures a tortured psyche well.

Truly one of the most incredible short story collections I've read in a while. Dantiel W Moniz's Milk Blood Heat doesn't shy away from the awkward and uncomfortable topics, it embraces them. Each story is a different coming to terms, a reckoning of sorts. Rooted deeply in her beloved Florida, each of these protagonists grapples with identity, growing up, violence and trauma. I loved how the title repeats itself in many different iterations, Moniz is wonderfully playful despite the heavy topics. All around great read!
