Sindya Bhanoo's Seeking Fortune Elsewhere is an intimate look into contemporary South Indian American women's lives. Her characters and plot lines are remarkably lifelike and honest. This collection feels like the stories of my family, the stories of my aunts and classmates and cousins. Bhanoo captures the complexities of our lived experiences and creates a resonant, wonderful patchwork that can be returned to again and again. A wonderful debut.

Douglass's only work of fiction is decidedly interesting, though the plot is simple. I love the description of Madison Washington as a Black Hercules. The ending is somewhat ambiguous and leaves the reader confused. This book asks us can you be racist & an abolitionist?

Set in the post Reconstruction South, The Marrow of Tradition is a Black comedy of sorts. With bitter irony, Chesnutt explores what happens when racial tensions escalate in a Southern town. The dramatic flourishes make this a book worth checking out!

The Movement doesn't need more martyrs is a saying that can apply today as it did in 1970s when Walker penned Meridian. This timeless classic explores race, identity and personal development through the eyes of a young Black woman during the post Civil Rights era. It's hard not to be besotted with Meridian at the end of this novel, I dare you to try!

Adapted for plays and movies, A Lesson Before Dying is a Lousiana classic. Heart wrenching in its premise, the book asks us to consider what it means to die as a man. When young Jefferson is sentenced to the death penalty, Mr Grant Wiggins has to teach him how to be a man. But first, Wiggins has to learn the Lesson himself. A wonderful book!

Personally not my style of poetry..plus the poem about his sister creeped me out.
