I wanted to like this more so badly. I feel like if I had read it myself I would have enjoyed it way more but I just... really... did not like the audiobook narration. At all. It annoyed me and I got distracted by that annoyance. But otherwise... the events and the characters were very well done! I'll have to try this again in book form.

I think my expectations were just too high and that’s my own fault so setting that aside, this book was still really solid. What I loved? The world! The magic system. I am sooooo invested in this kingdom and the way magic works here. I love the concept of the demons and orisha as well. It truly was fascinating.
I did feel slightly let down by the development of some of the characters. I feel like there was a lot more to explore with some of them, especially arti, but as I said, this was still good and I definitely need the second book ASAP!
