Okay so, this book was definitely a fun read! The characters are all quirky and unique. I remember them. I actually like and care about them. The characters are strong in this book! The magic system is also something I have never seen before. Tattoo magic? Hello, sign me up!

The world building is also a strength of this book. The religion, the towns and cities, the atmosphere, it is all very tangible and believable that I found I could get sucked into the pages and appear right then and there in the middle of the story.

You have action, adventure, lies, mystery, a little dash of flirtatious romance and bam, you have an excellent book! The reason I am not giving it 5 stars is because it does take a little bit to set up. The beginning feels slow, despite the awesome information and set up you are getting. Still, this book is completely worth a read!

4.5 stars

One of the strengths of this book was that it didn't waste any time getting right to it. The past few month's I have been struggling with some slower-paced books, so this was exactly what I needed at the time.

In a world where magic is banned, only royalty has the privilege of using Silver. However, when Ren, just a seemingly ordinary girl, discovers she has this ability too, she has to lay low. From petty thievery to pit fighting, Ren does what she needs to survive in the shadows, however, when her secret is discovered, she is thrust into a world of dangerous competition, schemes, and revolution.

You guys, this was exactly what I needed! It had the intrigue of a kingdom in decline and rebellion, it was dark and gritty and funny, and it had my favorite trope ever: Enemies to Lovers. I cannot get enough of this trope right now! I feel like we have seen versions of this type of story many times but I didn't hold it against Of Silver and Shadow because I flipping love this kind of book!

Not to mention Ren!! She is witty, funny, hilarious, determined, strong-willed, but also guarded, broken up a bit, and at times downright annoying, but that was what made her so real and compelling and I would keep reading about her all year if I could.

Over all, I definitely recommend this and I can't wait for more!

I had some difficulty with this one. The concept was what pulled me in. Plus, you see that killer cover and title? I was extremely hyped to read it and that may have been part of its undoing for me.

There were so many povs. Now, normally I don't mind that so long as I have had time to get to know our main characters intimately in earlier books, but this was the first book, so it was difficult to remember who was who and keep up with what was going on by jumping around so much. I never once felt connected to one of the characters.

The plot itself, well, I felt like nothing much really happened for a good chunk of the book, and when the twists did start being revealed, they really weren't all that earth-shattering. I kinda just rolled on with it like it was no big deal.

I'm not trying to say that this book was bad. It wasn't. It was a fairly enjoyable read, but again, I think I had set the bar way higher than it needed to be before jumping into this book. One of the the things I did really like was getting to know more celtic mythology. I am a huge fan of mythologies of all types and culture, so this has really got me looking to find more books based in it.

One of the things this book did very strongly was weave together a fantastical, post-apocalyptic fantasy land with the legends of the mayan, aztec, and inca civilizations. That right there is almost reason enough to pick up this book. The world building was complex and incredible. The characters are diverse and compelling. I found myself getting attached, which to me is always the mark of a good book. Characters first, then plot.

Well, the plot happened to be fantastic too.

In Seventh Sun, there is the Chicome Empire, a land that has been thrashed by six apocalypses to date, each one of a different nature- water, storm, fire, famine, sickness, and beasts. In order to appease their goddess, the people hold rituals, rites, and sacrifices in an effort to gain her favor and her mercy. However, in the present day, the sun is setting earlier and earlier each day, indicating that a seventh apocalypse is on the horizon.

The characters here are, overall, strong! I did find the main protagonist to be a bit cookie-cutter, typical YA heroine-esque, but you know what? I didn't mind it. The story was strong, the other characters strong. I found myself being whisked from page to page at a pace that I haven't been reading at in months. And I have a newfound interest in the mayan, aztec, and incan cultures!

I definitely recommend picking this one up!
