I don't think I would have understood a good amount of this book if not for the footnotes, honestly. And on a surface level St John reminds me of puritanical Angel Clare. Rochester, though - a captivating character, and such a gentleman.

Wow - definitely one of the best books I've read in a while. She actually had me going for a bit, despite my cynicism. Wouldn't have guessed the real culprit, he seemed so nice and normal.

This book is so much fun! It's playful, sarcastic, and witty in turns — the tone fluctuates between insouciant irreverence and the awe that the universe and its sheer size inspires in most people: exactly how I imagine the eponymous volume it describes. The characters are all distinct and memorable, and the plot is so entertaining. Adams also strikes that balance between descriptive worldbuilding and respecting the reader's own comprehension and imagination in fairly straightforward prose highlighted with colorful and unique figurative language. The whole book felt like a "just the beginning" installment of an epic adventure, and it's definitely an effective hook for the rest of the series.

... if life is going to exist in a Universe of this size, then the one thing it cannot afford to have is a sense of proportion.

Just as great as the first book, possibly even more entertaining. I particularly enjoyed the discussion of grammar rules for non-linear timelines.

This is one of the books I go back to again and again, and it tells me a slightly different story every time. I'm seriously so happy I was given this book as a gift in elementary school; I had already read and loved it then, and I love it still.

I’m not sure why we have this one in traditional Chinese, but I have strong sentimental associations of it with cozy days and bedtimes spent reading with my parents. The whimsical illustrations and silly suggestions really appealed to me as a kid, and I read it so many times that even now, literally ten years later, I can still recite several sections by heart.
